Club<\/em> readers are spending too much time ingesting the worst shit imaginable online, <a href=\"https:\/\/corp.oup.com\/word-of-the-year\/\">the Oxford University Press has named \u201cbrain rot\u201d Word of the Year<\/a>. How else would one describe a year when Donald Trump sparked a dance craze? Maybe we should be thankful that \u201cHawk Tuah\u201d didn\u2019t make the shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we all have brain rot or, at least, think everyone else has it, and so it is Oxford\u2019s word of the year. But while we all use \u201cbrain rot\u201d to describe someone who gave themselves brain damage from watching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/17\/style\/pinkydoll-social-media-livestream.html\">Pinkydoll TikToks<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/what-is-fluoride-why-is-it-added-us-water-supply-2024-11-25\/\"> now thinks fluoride is the reason their life isn\u2019t working out so well<\/a>, the Oxford English Dictionary has a more authoritative definition.<\/p>\n<p><!-- inlinecontent_1 --> <!-- admarker --> <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>(n.) Supposed deterioration of a person\u2019s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as a result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oxford says the term comes from a little book called <i>Walden<\/i> by Henry David Thoreau. Ever heard of it? In the book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/10\/19\/pond-scum\">while waiting for his mother and sisters to bring him food<\/a>, Thoreau complained in his conclusion, \u201cWhile England endeavors to cure the potato-rot, will not any endeavor to cure the brain-rot, which prevails so much more widely and fatally?\u201d Sadly, no one has taken up his cause, and now Earth\u2019s cursed population must endure a lifetime of stories like <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/naked-rfk-jr-makes-appearance-in-wife-cheryl-hines-beauty-line-video-8753540\">Cheryl Hines hocking scented candles on Instagram as her husband, Robert F. Kennedy, showers naked behind her<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- inlinecontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<div class=\"grid-x articles-inline-insert\" id=\"inline-related-articles\">\n<ul class=\"articles grid-margin-x flex-container flex-dir-column\">\n<li class=\"grid-x grid-padding-x\"><a class=\"auto cell copy-container noimage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/great-job-internet-seriously-veronica-mars-movie-r-1798236873\"><b class=\"title\">Great job, Internet! (seriously):\u00a0<i>Veronica Mars<\/i>\u00a0movie raises all the money, gets the greenlight\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"grid-x grid-padding-x\"><a class=\"auto cell copy-container noimage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/o-hai-great-job-internet-1798222415\"><b class=\"title\">O hai, Great Job, Internet!<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<p>Brain rot ranks among memes and buzzwords we\u2019ve heard over the last 12 months. The others in Oxford\u2019s shortlist include \u201cDemure,\u201d which is very mindful, \u201cDynamic Pricing,\u201d \u201clore,\u201d \u201cromantasy\u201d (the shortlist\u2019s lone portmanteau), and the brain rot-adjacent word \u201cslop.\u201d That last one refers to \u201clow-quality, AI-generated material\u201d that is \u201cincreasingly visible to people using internet search engines or social media.\u201d We might have an answer to the question: \u201cWhat causes brain rot?\u201d It\u2019s almost like they feed us poison, so we buy their cures while suppressing our medicine. Oxford notes that \u201cbrain rot\u201d is not a \u201cnew or recent concept,\u201d but it has been used more frequently on social media, particularly on TikTok, this year. Between 2023 and 2024, its frequency per million words increased by 250%, which isn\u2019t terrible for a rizz-free society infected with brain rot.
