On Friday, Zelenskyy said that <strong>Nato protection for the free part of Ukraine could end the \u201chot war\u201d, leaving Kyiv to regain the Russian-occupied areas through diplomatic means.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\"><strong>Zelenskyy said on Sunday that his country needed security guarantees from Nato and more weapons to defend itself before any talks with Russia.<\/strong> He called for \u201csteps forward with Nato\u201d and a \u201cgood number\u201d of long-distance weapons for Ukraine to defend itself. \u201cOnly when we have all these items and we are strong, after that, we have to make the very important \u2026 agenda of meeting with one or another of the killers,\u201d he said, adding that the EU and Nato should be involved in any negotiations. <strong>Zelenskyy made the comments after meeting the EU\u2019s new top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, and the EU council chief, Antonio Costa,<\/strong> who were visiting Kyiv as a show of support on their first day in office.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kallas said before their meeting that for Kyiv \u201cthe strongest security guarantee is Nato membership \u2026 <strong>We need to definitely discuss this \u2013 if Ukraine decides to draw the line somewhere, then how can we secure peace so that Putin doesn\u2019t go any further.\u201d <\/strong>Kallas said the EU \u201cshouldn\u2019t really rule out anything\u201d in terms of the question of sending European troops to help enforce any ceasefire. \u201cWe should have this strategic ambiguity around this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<li class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/dec\/01\/who-is-eu-chief-diplomat-kaja-kallas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jennifer Rankin writes from Brussels<\/a> that it is no surprise Kallas went to Ukraine on her first day as the EU\u2019s chief diplomat.<\/strong> \u201cMy message is clear: the European Union wants Ukraine to win this war,\u201d said Kallas, who stood down as Estonia\u2019s prime minister to take the job.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\"><strong>At least three people were killed in a Russian drone attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson<\/strong>, the regional governor said on Sunday. US groups on Sipri\u2019s list grew sales by 2.5% in total compared with the year before to $317bn. Market leaders Lockheed Martin and RTX however saw slightly lower arms sales.
