The region is historically rich in\u00a0<strong>gold<\/strong>, making his discovery seem like a stroke of luck. Armed with his\u00a0<strong>metal detector<\/strong>, Hole was sure that he had found a prized nugget hidden within the reddish rock, and he was eager to extract it.<\/p>\n<p>However, his attempts to break the rock proved futile. He used a variety of tools, including a\u00a0<strong>rock saw<\/strong>, an\u00a0<strong>angle grinder<\/strong>, and even\u00a0<strong>acid<\/strong>, but the rock remained unscathed. Despite all his efforts, it refused to reveal its secrets. \u201cIt had this sculpted, dimpled look to it,\u201d Melbourne Museum geologist\u00a0<strong>Dermot Henry<\/strong>\u00a0later explained, adding, \u201cThat\u2019s formed when they come through the\u00a0<strong>atmosphere<\/strong>, they are melting on the outside, and the atmosphere sculpts them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After years of frustration, Hole decided to take the mysterious rock to the\u00a0<strong>Melbourne Museum<\/strong>\u00a0for identification. (Museums Victoria)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A\u00a0<strong>Meteorite<\/strong>\u00a0of Unmatched\u00a0<strong>Value<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Maryborough meteorite<\/strong>, as it was named, is a rare find, weighing an impressive\u00a0<strong>17 kilograms (37.5 pounds)<\/strong>. Unlike the more common gold nuggets found in the region, this meteorite is one of only\u00a0<strong>17 meteorites<\/strong>\u00a0ever recorded in the state of\u00a0<strong>Victoria<\/strong>. This made the discovery far more significant from a scientific perspective. The rock\u2019s high\u00a0<strong>iron<\/strong>\u00a0content and unique characteristics classified it as an\u00a0<strong>H5 ordinary chondrite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>If you saw a rock on Earth like this, and you picked it up, it shouldn\u2019t be that heavy,<\/strong>\u201d Birch said. Once the rock was cut open using a\u00a0<strong>diamond saw<\/strong>, the researchers discovered tiny, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2024\/11\/nasa-sulfur-crystals-mysterious-rock-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"71969\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crystallized<\/a> droplets of metallic minerals known as\u00a0<strong>chondrules<\/strong>\u2014clues from the early days of our\u00a0<strong>Solar System<\/strong>. (Museums Victoria)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The\u00a0<strong>Maryborough Meteorite\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Scientific Importance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The meteorite is estimated to be\u00a0<strong>4.6 billion years old<\/strong>, originating from the\u00a0<strong>asteroid belt<\/strong>\u00a0between\u00a0<strong>Mars<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jupiter<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Dermot Henry<\/strong>\u00a0explained that the meteorite likely \u201c<strong>comes out of the asteroid belt between <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2024\/08\/planetary-conjunction-august-jupiter-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7476\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mars and Jupiter<\/a>, and it\u2019s been nudged out of there by some asteroids smashing into each other, then one day it smashes into Earth.<\/strong>\u201d The rock\u2019s journey from the asteroid belt to Earth provides scientists with a unique opportunity to study the early formation of our\u00a0<strong>Solar System<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Meteorites, like the Maryborough specimen, are of great scientific importance because they can contain\u00a0<strong>\u201cstardust\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0older than our\u00a0<strong>Solar System<\/strong>, offering insight into how\u00a0<strong>stars<\/strong>\u00a0form and evolve. They transport us back in time, providing clues to the age, formation, and chemistry of our Solar System (including Earth).<\/strong>\u201d Unlike gold, meteorites hold the potential to unlock mysteries of our\u00a0<strong>universe<\/strong>, including the origins of life itself.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Victoria<\/strong>, thousands of\u00a0<strong>gold nuggets<\/strong>\u00a0have been discovered over the years, but the discovery of the\u00a0<strong>Maryborough meteorite<\/strong>\u00a0is truly rare. \u201c<strong>This is only the 17th meteorite found in Victoria, whereas there\u2019s been thousands of gold nuggets found,<\/strong>\u201d Henry noted, adding, \u201c<strong>Looking at the chain of events, it\u2019s quite, you might say, astronomical it being discovered at all.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the origins of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryborough_meteorite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryborough meteorite<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are still not fully understood, its rarity and value to science far outweigh the allure of\u00a0<strong>gold<\/strong>.
