That would extend their streak of years without a playoff win to 14.<\/p>\n<p>However, they have an ace in the hole. They have quarterback <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"DiAaXv04mEyJr9Ro\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/caleb-williams-DiAaXv04mEyJr9Ro\/\">Caleb Williams<\/a>. They have pass catchers <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"lJC2fLxAQm3CgUEx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/dj-moore-lJC2fLxAQm3CgUEx\/\">DJ Moore<\/a>, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"70sxF40PDCm1hhJI\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/rome-odunze-70sxF40PDCm1hhJI\/\">Rome Odunze<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"khh0D8BVwSKwlU9l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/cole-kmet-khh0D8BVwSKwlU9l\/\">Cole Kmet<\/a>. They have defensive standouts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/montez-sweat-PrUL0pksX6Bmv7jj\/\">Montez Sweat<\/a>, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"i85xaNU3yrXA5JW3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/jaylon-johnson-i85xaNU3yrXA5JW3\/\">Jaylon Johnson<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"o2ajttlWZ5gyaTDU\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/kyler-gordon-o2ajttlWZ5gyaTDU\/\">Kyler Gordon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The quarterback is in place. There\u2019s a young nucleus. They have an extra second-round pick and a healthy salary-cap situation. The window to win is now, and that should appeal to head-coaching candidates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5957910\/2024\/11\/30\/matt-eberflus-fired-bears-players-locker-room\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/11\/29232521\/GettyImages-2183196534-scaled-e1732940751254-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">The Bears finally fired Matt Eberflus. But he lost the locker room long ago<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But if chairman George McCaskey, president Kevin Warren and general manager Ryan Poles miss, then they\u2019re wasting all of that. Thomas Brown might save them from wasting Williams\u2019 rookie season, but the team that has wandered around looking for quarterbacks for decades appears to have one, and he\u2019s on a rookie deal. There\u2019s an incredible opportunity \u2014 but they have to get it right.<\/p>\n<p>Since McCaskey took over in 2011, this will be his fifth head-coaching search. It will be the first for Warren in the president\/CEO role. It\u2019ll be the first time Poles goes through the process from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five suggestions ahead of the most important hire for this franchise in a long time.<\/p>\n<h2>1. No search firms, no \u2018committees\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Warren and Poles shouldn\u2019t need any counseling or guidance. They have more than enough connections in the league and should be plenty aware of what this team and this building needs. They shouldn\u2019t need an Ernie Accorsi or Bill Polian.<\/p>\n<p>While I did commend the makeup of the search committee the last go-around, that was before Warren was hired, and I simply appreciated that McCaskey was thinking outside the box and allowing other voices in the room. But the Bears are 14-32 since that committee oversaw the hiring process.<\/p>\n<p>For Poles, if the head coach doesn\u2019t work out, it\u2019s rare for a GM to get a third choice. He must be incredibly convicted in the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Now, by suggesting that Warren and Poles handle the search on their own, that doesn\u2019t mean fans necessarily should have confidence they\u2019ll get it right. There\u2019s no example of a successful head coaching hire to go off. The Bears\u2019 record on the field is what it is under Poles and since Warren arrived. But they don\u2019t need a slew of outside voices. That hasn\u2019t worked, either.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of consultants, the Bears should be weary of the optics that come with hiring another head coach repped by Trace Armstrong. The prominent coaching agent, who played for the Bears, reps Poles, Matt Nagy, Matt Eberflus, Shane Waldron and Luke Getsy, among others. Don\u2019t be afraid of a big personality<\/h2>\n<p>A sentiment around the league, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5910313\/2024\/11\/11\/bears-caleb-williams-shane-waldron-matt-eberflus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as expressed in this story by colleague Mike Sando<\/a>, is that Warren and Poles would be reticent to hire the type of head coach who garners a lot of attention and might want a little extra power, too.<\/p>\n<p>Those coaches are popular nowadays. Look at Dan Campbell in Detroit, and contrast that with what the Bears just experienced with Eberflus. Someone like Mike Vrabel should be welcomed. In six seasons coaching the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"61\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/titans\/\">Titans<\/a>, Vrabel went to the playoffs three times, one more than Marc Trestman, John Fox, Nagy and Eberflus combined. His name will come up a lot, and his brashness shouldn\u2019t be a turnoff.<\/p>\n<p>Heck, if Bill Belichick or Pete Carroll shows interest but wants personnel control, that might be a difficult conversation, but it can\u2019t be a deal-breaker when you\u2019re talking about Super Bowl-winning coaches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5957311\/2024\/11\/29\/chicago-bears-matt-eberflus-fired\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/11\/03224838\/GettyImages-2182732293-scaled-e1732914660550-1024x684.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">For Matt Eberflus and Bears, the math didn&#8217;t work out. Patience is a virtue<\/h2>\n<p>First and foremost, the Bears need to hire the right candidate, whether that takes place tomorrow or after the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>But in recent hiring cycles, the team has moved quickly, and that hasn\u2019t led to the desired results.<\/p>\n<p>Once John Fox became available in 2015, the search shifted immediately and it didn\u2019t take long before he was head coach. Nagy was an option sooner than expected after the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"46\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/chiefs\/\">Chiefs<\/a> lost to the Titans in the wild-card round. Eberflus wasn\u2019t in the playoffs last time. There were no scheduling conflicts to interview him.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"58\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/niners\/\">49ers<\/a> don\u2019t regret having to wait until after the Super Bowl to introduce Kyle Shanahan as their head coach. Learn from Thomas Brown<\/h2>\n<p>Poles and Warren should be taking a lot of notes over the next five weeks, based on their observations and those of Bears players.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does that allow them to consider Brown a serious candidate but also how his personality and X\u2019s and O\u2019s will figure in the next hire.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/6cZBV58zGwmj4BVlV4AlQp?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If Brown can galvanize the team, what trait of his allowed that to happen? That should be high on a priority list. If Brown keeps showing success working with Williams and the offense, what\u2019s the reason for it? If the Bears believe they ultimately want someone who\u2019s been a head coach before but won\u2019t call plays, can they find a way to keep Brown in this role?<\/p>\n<p>Based on conversations with team sources over the weekend, there is a little excitement about the next five weeks. Understand the challenge of the Chicago market<\/h2>\n<p>The pressure of being an <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/\">NFL<\/a> head coach is high whether it\u2019s in Chicago or Jacksonville. But there is a uniqueness to being Bears head coach. Yes, there\u2019s the franchise\u2019s deep history, and its recent futility, but the media market is massive.<\/p>\n<p>Talking to sources around the league, Chicago is considered maybe the most difficult place for a head coach as far as the attention goes. New York is split between two teams. The same goes for Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The easiest way for a coach to handle the Chicago media market is to win. When the wins don\u2019t come, the messaging is critical, too. The way the Bears have lost games during this streak has been brutal and unprecedented. But the aftermath wasn\u2019t communicated well enough.
