Webb\u2019s view makes the \u201ccrown\u201d of the sombrero invisible, changing the appearance of the galaxy to resemble a bull\u2019s-eye. Meanwhile, distant galaxies glimmer in the background of the image.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000m356m7184oahq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The galaxy \u2014 also known as Messier 104, or M104 \u2014 is about 30 million light-years from Earth in the Virgo constellation. French astronomer and comet hunter Pierre M\u00e9chain discovered it in 1781. M\u00e9chain named the galactic find for his colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/people\/explore-the-night-sky-hubbleatms-messier-catalog-bio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles Messier<\/a>, who famously cataloged star clusters and nebulae.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000n356mydeiqzx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Webb\u2019s sensitive instruments can detect celestial objects through varying wavelengths of infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye, to reveal previously unseen details of the universe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000o356mhi452myl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fine details of Messier 104 detected by MIRI also showcase the galaxy\u2019s outer ring, revealing how dust \u2014 a crucial ingredient for celestial objects such as stars and planets \u2014 is structured and distributed throughout the galaxy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000p356m8daf18ln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Previously, when NASA\u2019s now-retired <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/spitzer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spitzer Space Telescope<\/a> observed the Sombrero galaxy, the outer ring appeared smooth, but Webb\u2019s new imagery reveals the complex, clumpy nature of the dusty ring, which could suggest the presence of a stellar nursery.\n    <\/p>\n<div But the Sombrero galaxy is quiet in terms of star formation compared with other galaxies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/explore-the-night-sky\/hubble-messier-catalog\/messier-82\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Messier 82<\/a>. Ten times as many stars are born in the latter galaxy than the estimated 100 billion stars that exist in the Milky Way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000r356mc67ernvz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists estimate that the rings of the Sombrero galaxy produce less than one solar mass of stars each year, with one solar mass equaling the mass of our sun. In contrast, the Milky Way is responsible for creating about two solar masses a year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/webb\/hats-off-to-nasas-webb-sombrero-galaxy-dazzles-in-new-image\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000s356mqjs0isxz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The supermassive black hole at the center of the Sombrero galaxy is also less active than those at the center of other galaxies, slowly consuming material from Messier 104 and releasing a bright but small jet of radiation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000t356m3bf7ll08@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the galaxy is full of 2,000 globular clusters, or groups of hundreds of thousands of old stars gravitationally held together, providing the perfect place for astronomers to conduct comparison studies of stars that are the same age but differ in mass and other aspects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm476pnf2000u356mkisqskq7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Webb telescope, launched in December 2021, will begin its fourth year of observing the universe in July.
