Amyloid plaques typically appear first, with tau tangles arriving later as the disease progresses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet000t3b6m2gmg7r7x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe more amyloid or tau you have in the brain, the sicker the brain becomes,\u201d said senior study author Dr. Cyrus Raji, associate professor of radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet000u3b6m1ih562p0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe way we can track a sicker looking brain is lower blood flow,\u201d Raji said. \u201cWe also saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/24\/health\/stress-memory-loss-under-50-study\/index.html\">brain atrophy,<\/a> or a wasting away of gray matter, in a part of the brain\u2019s memory center called the hippocampus.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet000v3b6mht2vt2fq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Less blood flow in the memory center of the brain may cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/04\/health\/alcohol-brain-shrinkage-wellness\/index.html\">shrinkage<\/a>, another key biomarker for Alzheimer\u2019s, said preventive neurologist Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Florida. He was not involved in the new research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet000w3b6m049xqwdy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSince the study found these relationships decades before cognitive decline and an expected diagnosis, having laser sharp focus on reducing belly fat can be one of our most powerful tools to fight this terrible disease,\u201d Isaacson said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet000x3b6mj7ljt9v0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19136980\/#:~:text=The%20recognition%20of%20obesity%20as,years%20ago%20was%20considered%20irrelevant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>, which estimates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/03\/world\/world-obesity-2023-wellness-intl-scli\/index.html\">more than half the world<\/a> will be overweight or obese within 10 years. At this point in the research, the presence of tau was not confirmed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00113b6md4x8t6kv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Visceral fat wraps itself around the major organs of the body and is completely different than the subcutaneous fat on the rest of the body \u2014 subcutaneous fat typically makes up 90% of the body\u2019s fat, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/23968-subcutaneous-fat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cleveland Clinic.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00123b6mjqszzru5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>\u201c<\/strong>Most of a person\u2019s body mass index (BMI) reflects subcutaneous fat, not visceral fat,\u201d Raji said. \u201cSo we measure visceral fat using abdominal MRI, and we have a specialized computer program that can measure the actual volume of visceral adipose tissue.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00133b6m650qk5m5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study also used gold-standard amyloid positron emission tomography, or PET, scans to verify the presence of amyloid and tau in the brains of study participants, and magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, to measure levels of visceral fat that occur when waistlines expand.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00143b6mj5n4gpu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe more visceral fat one has, the more inflammation happens in the body and it\u2019s much worse, in truth, than the inflammation that occurs with subcutaneous fat,\u201d Raji said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00153b6mjqgzkdi5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/22\/health\/belly-fat-measurement-heart-disease-wellness\/index.html\">Visceral fat<\/a> receives more blood flow due to its placement near organs and is more hormonally active than subcutaneous fat, Raji said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00163b6m0dcicukj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe looked at insulin resistance via fasting plasma insulin levels and glucose tolerance tests and found the most abnormally high insulin was seen in people with higher amounts of visceral fat,\u201d he said. \u201cVisceral fat is the more metabolically abnormal, diabetes-inducing fat.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00173b6mnklke0lw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That study also found a relationship between deep belly fat and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/24\/health\/stress-memory-loss-under-50-study\/index.html\">brain atrophy,<\/a> or a wasting away of gray matter, in a part of the brain\u2019s memory center called the hippocampus, Raji said. Brain atrophy is another biomarker of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00183b6mqurbm1gw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study has continued, adding an additional 48 participants to make a total of 80. The average age of those in the study was 49, and the average BMI was 32. A BMI of over 30 is considered obese by the medical establishment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet00193b6m3isuhz1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Updates on the findings so far were presented in abstracts at the Radiology Society of North America\u2019s 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diagnosticimaging.com\/conferences\/rsna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conference<\/a> on Monday, Raji said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001a3b6mqqiyn93l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat is new is that we demonstrate for the first time that higher amounts of visceral or hidden fat<strong> <\/strong>is related to abnormally high tau proteins in persons up to 20 years before they could develop the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer\u2019s disease,\u201d Raji said. \u201cPreviously, we had only showed a link between visceral fat and amyloid.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001b3b6mmr7upv88@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The PET scans showed that as visceral fat levels went up, so did levels of both amyloid and tau, according to the new research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001c3b6m1pl5maex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis work is highly impactful and clinically relevant for the 47 million Americans, and hundreds of millions more globally, who have early signs of Alzheimer\u2019s starting silently in their brains, but have not yet developed symptoms,\u201d Isaacson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001d3b6mff0gzdb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are smart ways to reduce belly fat that can reverse these trends, Isaacson said. First, don\u2019t focus just on body weight, but also body composition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001e3b6mnx9nqavd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis can be done easily at home by using a biometric scale or can be monitored by using an annual DEXA scan ordered by a healthcare provider. This scan is also commonly used to track bone density as we age,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001f3b6m0nq4gbla@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Exercise is key, Isaacson added, but do it by working out \u201csmarter \u2014 not harder.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001g3b6memqjvwoz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTo more efficiently get into \u2018fat burning\u2019 mode and lose body fat over time, I suggest taking a brisk walk, at a steady pace, working up to at least 45 \u2014 60 minutes two to three times per week,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001h3b6mtdfuusfc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You want to follow what experts call \u201cZone 2 training,\u201d which can be tracked using a simple method \u2014 being able to carry on a conversation while exercising, but just barely, Isaacson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001i3b6mamdojsa6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWalking fast on a treadmill at a slight incline, or walking with a weighted vest, are ways to get into the fat burning zone more quickly and efficiently,\u201d he said. \u201cTracking and building muscle mass is also key \u2014 the more muscle a person has, the higher their metabolism and the better they can burn fat through the day.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm47ldhet001j3b6m33c1ilfc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If your muscle mass is low, try strength training for at least 30 minutes twice a week or more, and be sure to eat adequate amounts of protein intake throughout the day, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/02\/health\/belly-fat-brain-atrophy-alzheimers-wellness\/index.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CNN \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 As the size of a person\u2019s belly grows, the memory center of their brain shrinks and beta amyloid and tau may appear \u2014 all of this occurring as &hellip;
