On this most recent rendezvous, the probe was 200 times farther from the planet than on its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/bepicolombo-mercury-probe-flyby-images\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/bepicolombo-mercury-probe-flyby-images\">previous flyby<\/a>, which saw it come within just 103 miles (165 kilometers) of Mercury&#8217;s surface.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>Despite the greater distance in this recent flyby, the probe was once again able to generate an eerie image of diminutive Mercury, shining alone in the darkness of space. This fifth flyby is the first during which the probe used its Mercury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer (MERTIS) instrument, which measures the temperature and composition of the planet&#8217;s surface and reveals what types of minerals are found on the planet&#8217;s surface, which the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\">European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2024\/11\/BepiColombo_s_fifth_Mercury_flyby\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2024\/11\/BepiColombo_s_fifth_Mercury_flyby\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> is &#8220;one of the key Mercury mysteries that BepiColombo is designed to tackle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35671-bepicolombo-facts.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35671-bepicolombo-facts.html\">BepiColombo<\/a> is operated by the ESA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\">JAXA<\/a>).
