Experts searched for an apt comparison, finding some similarities to the pardons granted by Gerald R. Ford to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/08\/us\/politics\/nixon-ford-pardon-watergate.html\" title=\"\">Richard M. Nixon<\/a>; Andrew Johnson to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1865\/05\/30\/archives\/president-johnsons-amnesty-proclamation-restoration-to-rights-of.html\" title=\"\">former Confederate soldiers<\/a>; George H.W. Bush to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/12\/25\/us\/pardons-bush-pardons-6-iran-affair-aborting-weinberger-trial-prosecutor-assails.html\" title=\"\">Iran-contra figures<\/a>; and to those <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/07\/us\/politics\/clinton-first-brother-is-wary-chatty-and-still-occasionally-attracting-attention.html\" title=\"\">issued<\/a> to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/23\/us\/politics\/trump-pardon-manafort-stone.html\" title=\"\">more distant family members<\/a> by President Bill Clinton and by Donald J. Trump during his first term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet, none of those pardons seemed to hit as close to home for the presidents who issued them, nor did they cover as broad a range of activity over as long a period of time, experts said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is extraordinarily hazardous to use the pardon power in a case where the person is an intimate of the president,\u201d said Aziz Z.
