(AP Photo\/Ng Han Guan)\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2122680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A security official moves journalists away from the Wuhan Institute of Virology after a World Health Organisation team arrived for a field visit on February 3, 2021 [Ng Han Guan\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cases of COVID-19 were first identified in Wuhan \u2013 located in central China\u2019s Hubei province \u2013 in December 2019, with the city widely believed to be where the virus first emerged.<\/p>\n<p>The virus quickly spread worldwide, killing more than 7 million people and creating turmoil in the global economy as countries closed borders and ordered lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>While US federal agencies, the World Health Organization and scientists worldwide have sought to determine the origins of COVID-19, a consensus has not emerged.<\/p>\n<p>Many researchers believe the virus had a zoonotic origin \u2013 spreading from animals to humans \u2013 and may have been transmitted at a wet market in Wuhan.<\/p>\n<p>However, the US Department of Energy assessed with \u201clow confidence\u201d in an intelligence report last year that the virus most likely escaped from a lab.<\/p>\n<p>The department\u2019s finding echoed that of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which said in 2021 with \u201cmoderate confidence\u201d that the virus probably spread after a laboratory mishap.<\/p>\n<p>The House committee was convinced by the lab leak theory after meeting 25 times over the past two years, conducting more than 30 transcribed interviews and reviewing more than a million pages of documents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2122688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2122688\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-2122688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/AP21343728981074.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C514\" alt=\"FILE - The Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, sits closed in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province on Jan. 21, 2020. Some scientists believe it started at the market.\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2122688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The closed Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan in central China\u2019s Hubei on January 21, 2020 [Dake Kang\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As part of that investigation, members of the Republican-controlled congressional panel held two days of interviews with Anthony Fauci, the government scientist who led public health messaging in the early days of the pandemic before becoming the subject of conspiracy theories about the virus\u2019 origins.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have accused Fauci, who retired in December 2022 after 54 years at the NIH, of being responsible for causing the worst pandemic in a century by approving funding for Chinese scientists they believe manufactured SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, who regularly clashed with US President-elect Donald Trump during his first term, has also faced accusations of suppressing the theory that COVID-19 originated from a lab leak in China.<\/p>\n<p>The 83-year-old immunologist, who now lives with security protection due to death threats against his family, told the panel at a public hearing in June that it would have been \u201cmolecularly impossible\u201d for the bat viruses studied at the Wuhan lab to turn into the virus that caused the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve also been very, very clear, and said multiple times, that I don\u2019t think the concept of there being a lab [leak] is inherently a conspiracy theory,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is conspiracy is the kind of distortions of that particular subject, like, it was a lab leak and I was parachuted into the CIA like Jason Bourne and told the CIA that they should really not be talking about a lab leak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The probe also found that lockdowns \u201cdid more harm than good\u201d and mask mandates were \u201cineffective at controlling the spread of Covid-19\u201d, contradicting research showing that masking in public does reduce transmission rates.<\/p>\n<p>While social distancing guidelines came under criticism, the panel concluded that travel restrictions that were put in place saved lives.<\/p>\n<p>The panel labelled Trump\u2019s publicly-funded project to develop COVID vaccines \u2013 named Operation Warp Speed \u2013 a \u201ctremendous success\u201d, but concluded that school closures would have an \u201cenduring impact\u201d on US children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/12\/3\/us-lawmakers-back-covid-lab-leak-theory-after-two-year-probe\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A committee of the United States Congress has backed the theory that a lab leak caused the COVID-19 pandemic.
