he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I wish I\u2019d never done that.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Higginson said his wife had rung him on the morning of 7 April to say she did not feel well.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She said her stomach was distended &#8220;like I\u2019m pregnant&#8221;, that her skin was yellow, and that she was coughing up blood.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;She said, &#8216;Something\u2019s not right\u2026 just get here&#8217;,&#8221; Dr Higginson told the inquest.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He said he arrived at the hospital to find his wife exhausted and vomiting blood.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Higginson said he had heard the shouting and sensed \u201cpanic\u201d when he went to get more sick bowls from the nurses\u2019 station.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The inquest heard Mrs Higginson was transferred to intensive care, where she continued to deteriorate.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Her family was told that she had suspected sepsis.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She began to hallucinate and rip out the tubes going into her body, and was put into an induced coma.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Higginson said he had left his wife with her parents hours earlier so he could take their young children home.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He broke down as he described a phone call from his wife\u2019s mother.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I just heard this howl from her, this blood-curdling sound.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cShe just burst out crying and said, &#8216;She\u2019s gone\u2019.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The hospital carried out a post-mortem examination to try to find the source of the sepsis and issued a death certificate.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Several months later Dr Higginson went to his GP for antidepressants because he was &#8220;struggling&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He said that during the course of the appointment he told the GP that he hadn\u2019t seen the post-mortem report, and he was then given a copy.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I read staggered paracetamol overdose and I was like, &#8216;Oh my God&#8217;,&#8221; he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;My world was spinning.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Transient&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The trust previously said that as soon as it was realised the dose was incorrect, she was given the antidote.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The trust\u2019s investigation into Ms Higginson\u2019s death showed that the effect was &#8220;transient&#8221;, and the trust said it did not contribute to her death.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The inquest, at Bootle Town Hall, heard that in 2017 patients were not weighed in the emergency department, and were not asked their weight.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This happened only when they were admitted to a ward.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mrs Higginson\u2019s original prescription for paracetamol was written when she was still in the emergency department.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The mistake was spotted on 7 April by Rachel Brown, then a junior pharmacist, who was reviewing Mrs Higginson\u2019s medication.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">By that stage she had already received six doses.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ms Brown was asked by Henry Pithers KC, acting for the family, if there had been a lack of awareness among nursing staff about dosing for different body weights.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She said the system had been changed in 2018\/19 after Mrs Higginson\u2019s death, and there had been more training.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The hearing continues.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cz0r7e91n4ko\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Family handout Laura Higginson died in Whiston Hospital in April 2017 The husband of a woman who died days after being mistakenly overdosed with paracetamol in hospital sobbed in court &hellip;
