At least 34 people were hospitalized in the outbreak and at least four developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a rare but serious disease that can cause kidney failure, according to the agency. <\/p>\n<p>An E. coli infection can cause symptoms including diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The FDA said it tested recalled onions and an environmental sample from a grower, both of which tested positive for a different E. coli strain than the one involved in the outbreak. The agency said no human illnesses were linked to this different strain. Additional samples from the investigation tested negative for E. coli, the FDA said.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC update \u201creinforces the importance of our values, particularly in moving quickly to do the right thing and to always put people first,\u201d McDonald\u2019s North America Chief Impact Officer Michael Gonda and Chief Supply Chain Officer Cesar Pi\u00f1a said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFederal and state officials have repeatedly said that our immediate actions in October made any risk to the public \u2018very low,\u2019 and the risk has remained very low since then,\u201d they added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Contaminated food products linked to E. coli have been removed from McDonald\u2019s supply chain as of Oct. 22, the company said. No new illnesses have been reported since Oct. 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know trust is earned, and not given, and we want everyone on this call to know we\u2019re working hard to earn our customers\u2019 trust back,\u201d a McDonald\u2019s spokesperson said on Tuesday during a call with reporters.<\/p>\n<p>The burger-and-fries chain has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/17\/us-news\/mcdonalds-spends-millions-to-win-customers-back-after-deadly-e-coli-outbreak\/\">invested $100 million<\/a> in marketing efforts and franchisee support after the outbreak to help revamp the company\u2019s damaged image. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/29\/business\/mcdonalds-restaurant-visits-nosedive-after-e-coli-outbreak\/\">McDonald\u2019s visits nosedived<\/a> in the week after the outbreak was announced.<\/p>\n<p>The real number of people infected with E. coli during the outbreak is likely much higher and could have been from more states, since many recover without being tested for the bacteria or receiving medical care.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/27\/us-news\/girl-dies-from-e-coli-that-mom-thinks-came-from-mcdonalds\/\">six-year-old girl from Massachusetts died<\/a> from E. coli, which her mother believes she contracted after eating a McDonald\u2019s cheeseburger before a night of trick-or-treating. Public heath officials have not connected any cases of E. coli to McDonald\u2019s restaurants in Massachusetts or the broader Northeast region, McDonald\u2019s USA told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stephen Ostroff, a former deputy commissioner at the FDA who has been consulting with McDonald\u2019s on the outbreak, said he understands the girl\u2019s diagnosis to be a different type of E. coli than what Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Those with reported illnesses \u2013 who ranged in age from one to 88 years old \u2013 started experiencing symptoms between Sept. 12 and Oct. 21, the CDC said.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Farms, McDonald\u2019s slivered onions supplier in the states impacted by the outbreak, recalled its yellow onions. <\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 22, McDonald\u2019s paused sales of its Quarter Pounder burgers and removed onions across 3,000 locations. The company stopped sourcing from both the facility and the farm linked to the onions, and turned to another supplier within the McDonald\u2019s system that was able to fill the gap, McDonald\u2019s spokespeople said.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a week later, the world\u2019s largest fast food chain resumed sales of its Quarter Pounder burgers with a different supplier at approximately 900 locations.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado and Nebraska are the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/23\/business\/the-10-states-with-e-coli-cases-linked-to-mcdonalds-quarter-pounders\/\">states with the highest number of confirmed cases<\/a> linked to the McDonald\u2019s outbreak. At least 26 people fell ill in Colorado, including one older adult who died, the CDC said.
