But both have outgrown their original missions, flying through the darkness of space over 15 billion miles away, far beyond those planets they were originally tasked with observing.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of relying on tiny glimpses of sunlight as a power source, the pair are relying on radioisotope thermoelectric generators, which use radioactively decaying plutonium-238 isotopes as a direct source of power.<\/p>\n<p>But decades into their journey, that onboard source of electricity is almost depleted, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-end-is-near-for-nasas-voyager-probes\/\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\"><em>Wired<\/em> reports<\/a>, forcing scientists to shut down scientific instruments one by one. The power output is dropping around four watts per year, giving the probes a definitive end that&#8217;s now rapidly approaching.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, Voyager 1 and 2&#8217;s days are numbered \u2014 though scientists are still hopeful the pair will last until their 50th anniversary in space just over two years from now.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-k text-4 font-black  lg:border-b border-gray-900 pb-1\">It&#8217;s Getting Dark<\/h2>\n<p>Most recently, NASA engineers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/voyager-1-interstellar-spacecraft-finds-its-voice-again-as-nasa-restores-communications\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">confirmed last week<\/a> that they were able to restore communications with Voyager 1 after the spacecraft <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/voyager-1-probe-transmitter-trouble\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">went dark in October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Power levels are so low that when scientists switched on one of the heaters to get one of its instruments back online, a safety feature was tripped, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/voyager-1-interstellar-spacecraft-finds-its-voice-again-as-nasa-restores-communications\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\"><em>Space.com<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The feature in question ensures that non-essential systems are switched off to conserve energy. Fortunately, communications resumed on November 18.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s far from the first time Voyager 1 has struggled to stay online and on course. In September, engineers <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/nasa-activates-thrusters-voyager-1\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">managed to switch<\/a> its ancient probe to a different set of thrusters to keep it going.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the probe <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/nasa-voyager-1-incomprehensible-code\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">returned nonsensical messages<\/a> back to Earth, forcing scientists to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-1-fully-operational\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">get creative yet again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Voyager 2 hasn&#8217;t fared much better, suffering from its own thankfully temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-mission-update-voyager-2-communications-pause\/\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">communication blackout<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>But despite scientists&#8217; best efforts, little can be done about the two probes&#8217; dwindling plutonium reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the team is still appreciative of a groundbreaking, decades-long mission that&#8217;s even managed to escape the heliopause, the outer boundary of the Sun&#8217;s heliosphere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we\u2019re all happy and relieved that the Voyager probes have both operated long enough to make it past this milestone,&#8221; said Voyager project manager Suzanne Dodd in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasas-voyager-2-probe-enters-interstellar-space\/\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">November statement<\/a>. &#8220;This is what we\u2019ve all been waiting for.
