{"id":133298,"date":"2024-12-04T18:50:49","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T11:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=133298"},"modified":"2024-12-04T18:50:49","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T11:50:49","slug":"airline-executives-set-to-defend-seat-fees-before-senate-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=133298","title":{"rendered":"Airline executives set to defend seat fees before Senate panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-106738018\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Seats in the economy class cabin on board an American Airlines Boeing Co. 777-300ER aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Brent Lewin | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>U.S. airline executives are set to defend their seating fees before a Senate panel Wednesday after the subcommittee accused the industry of charging\u00a0&#8220;junk&#8221;\u00a0fees to bring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/11\/26\/senate-report-slams-airlines-for-raking-in-billions-in-seat-fees.html\">billions in revenue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAL\/\">American<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DAL\/\">Delta<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UAL\/\">United<\/a>, Spirit and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ULCC\/\">Frontier<\/a>\u00a0brought in $12.4 billion in seating fees between 2018 and 2023, according to a report released Nov. 26 by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Those extra charges are for seats with additional legroom, as well as those in &#8220;preferred&#8221; locations that are closer to the front of the plane, or window or aisle seats, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our seat selection products are all voluntary,&#8221; Stephen Johnson, American&#8217;s chief strategy officer, said in written testimony ahead of the hearing. &#8220;For customers who value sitting in more in-demand locations, we do offer the opportunity to pay for more desirable seats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration and some lawmakers have promised to crack down on so-called &#8220;junk&#8221; fees and have cited the airline industry as a target for cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Executives at large airlines have defended their strategy to offer several types of economy service and add-on fees for selection of certain seats or checked bags, things that used to come for free with a ticket, and have said these options are communicated to customers.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, carriers have been racing to add more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/12\/22\/airplane-class-wars-are-now-in-the-coach-cabin-heres-your-guide.html\">premium seats<\/a>\u00a0on board to increase revenue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC airline news<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Fares that may require a fee to select a seat, for example, are clearly denoted with a symbol indicating that a seat in a different fare class or with extra legroom will need to be purchased for a fee,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Similar information is included for potential bag and other fees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Discounters such as Spirit and Frontier, which pioneered the fee-based model in the U.S., prompted competitors to come up with their own bare-bones basic economy class.
