At the Edgewood elementary school in Marysville, Ohio, where the Temple will start a program, the evangelical LifeWise program removes students for 55 minutes each week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The program is known for the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wtov9.com\/news\/local\/st-clairsvilles-lifewise-academy-expands-offering-bible-education-to-four-grades-on-the-big-red-bus\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">big red bus<\/a>\u201d which transports students from school to offsite locations for instruction, such as local churches or community centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In recent years, release time programs have experienced a revival, <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/life\/2024\/10\/lifewise-academy-legality-ohio-parents-school-board.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">particularly in Ohio<\/a>. LifeWise began with two districts in 2019, and by 2023 the program grew to 325 programs in 12 states, its CEO told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/faith-values\/more-than-300-public-schools-nationwide-learn-bible-this-year\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Fox News<\/a>. Its growth coincides with a conservative movement against \u201cwoke\u201d education, which has resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/sep\/23\/pen-book-bans\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">book bans<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/who-behind-attacks-educators-and-public-schools\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">activists<\/a> papering school boards with open records requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">That growth has come with controversy. Religious release programs have concerned other religious groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/news\/are-evangelicals-released-time-for-religion-programs-a-threat-to-catholic-formation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">including Catholics<\/a>, and at least <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/life\/2024\/10\/lifewise-academy-legality-ohio-parents-school-board.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">one school board in Ohio<\/a> rescinded permission for the program after concerned parents came out in force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cWe aren\u2019t trying to shut the LifeWise Academy down,\u201d June Everett, an ordained minister with the Satanic Temple, told <a href=\"http:\/\/cleveland.com\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Cleveland.com<\/a>. \u201cBut I do think a lot of school districts don\u2019t realize when they open the door for one religion, they open it for all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Satanic Temple is a \u201cnon-theistic\u201d church recognized by the IRS whose self-stated mission is to promote pluralism among religious views, empathy and the rejection of tyrannical authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Their other works include hauling a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/08\/17\/639726472\/satanic-temple-protests-ten-commandments-monument-with-goat-headed-statue\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">7ft-tall bronze Baphomet<\/a> statue \u2013 a winged man with a goat\u2019s head \u2013 to the steps of the Arkansas capitol to protest the installation of a Ten Commandments monument and starting the after-school Satan club, in response to the Christian Good News clubs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Satanic Temple began the program \u2013 the Hellion Academy of Independent Learning (Hail) \u2013 upon the request of parents who sought an alternative to the Christian program in Marysville, which some felt alienated non-Christian students, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/students-ohio-elementary-school-can-participate-satanic-temples-religious-learning-program\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Fox News<\/a> story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cLifeWise isn\u2019t fearful of other organizations offering [release time religious instruction],\u201d LifeWise\u2019s CEO and founder, Joel Penton, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/students-ohio-elementary-school-can-participate-satanic-temples-religious-learning-program\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">WCMH<\/a>. \u201cWe believe all families should have the opportunity to choose religious study during school hours and we trust parents to make the best choice for their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.NewsletterSignupBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-10\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"newsletter promotion\" class=\"dcr-av5vqf\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Get the most important US headlines and highlights emailed direct to you every morning<\/p>\n<p><gu-island name=\"SecureSignup\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"visible\" props=\"{&quot;newsletterId&quot;:&quot;today-us&quot;,&quot;successDescription&quot;:&quot;Get the most important US headlines and highlights emailed direct to you every morning&quot;}\"\/><span class=\"dcr-1eusqlu\"><strong>Privacy Notice: <\/strong>Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
