The news comes after the organization behind the show, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/critics-choice-association\/\" id=\"auto-tag_critics-choice-association_1\" data-tag=\"critics-choice-association\">Critics Choice Association<\/a>, attempted to reclassify it as a comedy series, <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has learned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCritics Choice nominations are determined by CCA nominating committees, and the CCA\u2019s TV nominating committee recently decided that only shows that \u201cinvolve conversation\u201d should henceforth be eligible for the best talk show honor. Apparently, this was born out of a desire to keep Critics Choice categories in line with Emmy categories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s true that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/saturday-night-live-emmys-2024-1235979566\/\">the TV Academy, in 2023, split into two its best variety talk series category<\/a>, which <em>Last Week Tonight<\/em> had won every year since 2016 (to the annoyance of folks associated with other talk shows). The resulting categories were best talk series and best scripted variety series. The former included shows like Comedy Central\u2019s <em>The Daily Show<\/em> and ABC\u2019s <em>Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em> in which \u201ca significant portion of the running time consists of unscripted interviews or panel discussions,\u201d even if they also include \u201cscripted elements and other aspects of a variety series such as monologues, musical performances, etc.\u201d Meanwhile, the latter went to shows like<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/last-week-tonight-recap-john-oliver-2025-elon-musk-wicked-tom-cruise-1236064849\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/last-week-tonight-recap-john-oliver-2025-elon-musk-wicked-tom-cruise-1236064849\/\"> <em>Last Week Tonight<\/em><\/a> and NBC\u2019s <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/snl-season-50-hosts-musical-guests-1235997226\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/snl-season-50-hosts-musical-guests-1235997226\/\">Saturday Night Live<\/a><\/em> that are \u201cprimarily scripted or feature loosely scripted improv and consist of discrete scenes, musical numbers, monologues, comedy stand-ups, sketches, etc.,\u201d even if they \u201coccasionally feature unscripted elements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHowever, the CCA copied only <em>half<\/em> of what the TV Academy did. It narrowed the sort of programs that could be eligible for its best talk show prize, but it did not create a new category for the shows that no longer met that definition (ostensibly because it couldn\u2019t create a new category after the submission deadline), leaving shows like <em>Last Week Tonight<\/em> in something of a no man\u2019s land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPeople associated with <em>Last Week Tonight<\/em> are frustrated that the change in eligibility requirements was never put in writing or shared with them prior to the submission deadline and that the only solution they were offered upon being told that the show was no longer eligible for best talk show was to enter it for consideration in the category of best comedy series. For that award, it would be competing with scripted programs such as FX\u2019s <em>The Bear<\/em>, ABC\u2019s <em>Abbott Elementary<\/em> and HBO\u2019s own <em>Hacks<\/em>.
