The Amazon founder was the closing interview for the event, which was held at New York\u2019s Jazz at Lincoln Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe added that when they made the decision, they knew it would cause a political firestorm and some damage to the <em>Post\u2019s<\/em> business, but that the erosion of trust that the media was facing made it a necessary decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe knew that this was going to be perceived in a very big way, these things punch above their weight,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can\u2019t do the wrong thing because you are worried about bad PR, or whatever you want to call it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI am very aware that the <em>Post<\/em> covers all presidents very aggressively, and will continue to cover all presidents very aggressively,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe also said that he is actively working on a plan to turn around the <em>Post <\/em>and position it for the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI have a bunch of ideas, and I am working on that right now,\u201d Bezos said. \u201cWe saved <em>The<\/em> <em>Washington Post<\/em> once, this will be the second time. It needs to be put back on a good footing again. \u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBezos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/amazoncoms-jeff-bezos-buys-washington-599701\/\">acquired<\/a> <em>The Washington Post<\/em> in 2013 for $250 million, hoping to turn the newspaper around. While the outlet has had some success in recent years, it has still struggled to keep up with the <em>Times<\/em>, as well as other competitors like <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/washington-post-will-not-endorse-president-2024-1236045429\/\">decision to end<\/a> presidential endorsements served as a shock to the system of the<em> Post<\/em>, with the editorial board having already written an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/jeff-bezos-presidential-endorsements-do-nothing-washington-post-subscriber-exodus-1236047197\/\">op-ed for the paper<\/a> a few days after the decision was announced, Bezos argued that \u201cPresidential endorsements do nothing to tip the scales of an election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe added, \u201cwhat presidential endorsements actually do is create a perception of bias. A perception of non-independence.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBezos said Wednesday, \u201cI\u2019m a terrible owner for the <em>Post<\/em> from the point of view of an appearance of conflict of interest,\u201d noting that executives from Amazon, Blue Origin and his other companies routinely meet with government officials. \u201cThe advantage I bring to the <em>Post <\/em>is, when they need financial resources, I am available. I am the doting parent in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut the tech executive also seemed upbeat about a second Donald Trump presidency, despite all the flame-throwing directed at him and the<em> Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI am very optimistic this time around, I am very hopeful, he seems to have a lot of energy around reducing regulation, and if I can help him do that, I am going to help them,\u201d he said, noting that big economic growth can help solve issues like the national debt. \u201cI am very optimistic that President Trump is serious about this regulatory agenda, and I think he has a good chance at succeeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs for the question about whether Elon Musk \u2014 who is Blue Origin\u2019s biggest competitor, with SpaceX \u2014 would use his relationship with Trump to hurt Blue Origin or Amazon, Bezos seemed unconcerned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI take at face value what has been said, which is that he is not going to use his political power to advantage his own companies or disadvantage his competitors,\u201d Bezos said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn fact, he said, \u201cI have had a lot of success in life not being cynical,\u201d and expressed optimism about the future of AI, of interplanetary travel, robotics and other big-picture items.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe are in multiple golden ages at once.
