This is its first holiday season. Yet already, there\u2019s a prominent general narrative that the device has flopped. But he\u2019s putting Vision Pro in a different category.<\/p>\n<p>In two recent interviews, Cook has said Vision Pro is an \u2018<strong><em>early adopter product<\/em><\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what he called it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/style\/tim-cook-interview-apple-intelligence-vision-pro-48c59018\">back in October<\/a> to <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAt $3,500, it\u2019s not a mass-market product,\u201d Cook says. \u201cRight now, it\u2019s an early-adopter product. People who want to have tomorrow\u2019s technology today\u2014that\u2019s who it\u2019s for. Fortunately, there\u2019s enough people who are in that camp that it\u2019s exciting\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Those same talking points came out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/big-interview-tim-cook-wants-apple-to-literally-save-your-life\/#:~:text=We%20view%20it%20sort%20of,%2C%20partners%2C%20and%20so%20forth.\">today\u2019s new <em>WIRED<\/em> interview<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an early adopter product,\u00a0for people\u00a0who want tomorrow\u2019s technology today. Those people are buying it, and the ecosystem is flourishing. In many cases, buying an Apple product meant paying a premium for something that may not be fully optimized for the masses.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s essentially what the Vision Pro is today. But try to find another \u2018early adopter product\u2019 anywhere else in Apple\u2019s recent history.<\/p>\n<p>Apple is vastly different now than it was even a decade ago, and certainly further back. Mostly the company\u2019s wild success has been a good thing, but it also puts unique expectations on every new product, and the Vision Pro has been a recent casualty of that.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-committing-to-vision-products-for-the-long-haul\">Committing to Vision products for the long haul<\/h2>\n<p>VR and AR were always going to need an ecosystem built out, and there\u2019s only so much goodwill developers could keep showing <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/guides\/arkit\/\">ARKit<\/a> without a real product behind it.<\/p>\n<p>With Vision Pro, Apple gets to build in public as it works toward a stronger ecosystem and eventually a lighter, more user-friendly and budget-conscious product.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not there yet, but that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n<p>If every new Apple product has to be an immediate hit, that pressure could cripple the company\u2019s creativity.
