South Korea has one of the fastest aging, fastest shrinking populations in the developed world. He has said the strike poses \u201ca grave threat to our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At issue is the government plan to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-doctors-protest-medical-school-students-d6e52e839a20c92757ec9a3a89cf480b\">raise South Korea\u2019s annual medical school admission cap<\/a><\/span> by 2,000 from the current 3,058. The enrollment plan is meant to add up to 10,000 doctors by 2035 to cope with the country\u2019s <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-business-south-korea-demographics-589d1cd13582f22498dc64a707c75a4d\">fast-aging population<\/a><\/span>. Officials say South Korea has 2.1 physicians per 1,000 people \u2014 far below the average of 3.7 in the developed world.<\/p>\n<p>The striking doctors-in-training predict that doctors in greater competition would overtreat patients, increasing public medical expenses. Some critics say the striking junior doctors simply oppose the government plan because they believe adding more doctors would result in lower incomes.<\/p>\n<h2>A powerful opposition in turmoil <\/h2>\n<p>Investigations and legal proceedings against major political figures are common in South Korea. Almost all former presidents, or their family members and key associates, have been mired in scandals near the end of their terms or after they left office.<\/p>\n<p>The current opposition leader, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-opposition-leader-stabbing-501e7fae38f12bca925391de34f3c8af\">Lee Jae-myung<\/a><\/span>, a firebrand liberal who <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-elections-voting-campaigns-seoul-f29dd8982b18c1f7318d579b9afc83f1\">narrowly lost the 2022 election<\/a><\/span> to Yoon, has also been dogged by corruption claims. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-lee-opposition-leader-stabbing-84aa9e86d3fc1413a77c89aeba6bad10\">Lee, who was stabbed in an attack<\/a><\/span> and underwent surgery earlier this year, says Yoon\u2019s promotion of divisive politics has worsened an already toxic national discourse. <\/p>\n<p>Last month Lee was convicted of violating election law and sentenced to a suspended prison term for making false statements during a presidential campaign. He faces three other trials over corruption and other criminal charges. <\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear whether the Supreme Court will decide on any of the cases before the next presidential vote in March 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Lee has steadfastly denied wrongdoing. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear, of course, how events in coming days will play out, but the martial law declaration could be a boon to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korean-opposition-leader-lee-jae-myung-suspended-prison-sentence-321aa7e383e409edff4bd5924ad73776\">Lee<\/a><\/span>, especially if it results in an early exit for Yoon and a presidential by-election.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, he livestreamed himself climbing over a wall near parliament, one of a wave of lawmakers who dodged troops and police to get into the National Assembly.<\/p>\n<h2>Massive protests drive an elected president out of office<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the most epochal event in recent South Korean political history \u2014 and the one many people will be thinking of as Yoon faces the consequences of his declaration \u2014 was the downfall of conservative former President Park Geun-hye.<\/p>\n<p>After near-daily protests in 2016 that saw millions take to the streets around the country, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-1be41dbf7e224ee782e92f2871b6878e\">Park was the first democratically<\/a><\/span> elected leader to be forced from office since democracy came to South Korea
