The two students, both boys, are in \u201cextremely critical condition\u201d and are being treated for \u201cvery, very serious injuries\u201d at a trauma center in the Sacramento area, Kory L. Honea, the sheriff of Butte County, said at a news conference Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At around 1:10 p.m., the authorities responded to the school, Feather River Adventist, in Oroville, Calif., about 60 miles north of Sacramento, after receiving 911 calls of an active shooter, said Megan McMann, a spokeswoman for the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Preliminary reports suggested that the gunman \u201ccame on to campus to meet with the principal to discuss the possibility of enrolling\u201d a family member as a student in a meeting that was previously scheduled, Sheriff Honea said. The meeting was \u201ccordial,\u201d but Sheriff Honea said investigators were still trying to better understand whether or not that meeting was a \u201cruse\u201d by the gunman so he could get onto the school grounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Shortly after the meeting ended, the principal heard shots being fired and screams, Sheriff Honea said. He believed that the students were outside of the classroom when the shooting took place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When the authorities arrived, they found that the gunman, an adult male, was \u201cdown\u201d with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff added. A handgun was found near the gunman\u2019s body.
