Valve&#8217;s Lawrence Yang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23499215\/valve-steam-deck-interview-late-2022\">has been saying since 2022<\/a> that &#8220;we\u2019re excited to see people make their own SteamOS machines.&#8221; And last November, Yang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/steamos-on-handheld-pcs\/\">told PC Gamer<\/a> that SteamOS would be made &#8220;more available to other handhelds with a similar gamepad-style controller&#8221; on a rough time frame of &#8220;soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In August, after <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/games\/1675200\/announcements\/detail\/4361258795952118018\">a SteamOS beta update<\/a> suggested SteamOS might be coming to Asus&#8217; Windows-based ROG Ally handheld, Yang <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2024\/08\/valves-bespoke-steam-deck-os-will-be-officially-available-on-asus-rog-ally\/\">told The Verge<\/a> that the Valve hardware team &#8220;is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve waited for that official support to materialize\u2014and for a long-promised general public distribution of SteamOS 3 on PCs\u2014 fans have <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2023\/06\/the-linux-coders-turning-the-rog-ally-and-other-handhelds-into-steam-deck-clones\/\">had to get a bit creative<\/a> to get the Linux-powered, gaming-focused OS onto their devices. Earlier this year, Ayaneo <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2024\/01\/why-more-pc-gaming-handhelds-should-ditch-windows-for-steamos\/\">announced its Next Lite handheld<\/a> would ship with <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/holoiso-eol\/holoiso\">HoloISO<\/a>, an Arch Linux fork that seeks to &#8220;provide a close-to-official SteamOS experience&#8221; without Valve&#8217;s official support.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, the <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2015\/02\/the-state-of-linux-gaming-in-the-steamos-era\/\">limited<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2015\/11\/ars-benchmarks-show-significant-performance-hit-for-steamos-gaming\/\">underperforming<\/a> software support for early SteamOS made Steam Machines a pretty poor alternative to Windows-powered gaming rigs.
