For half that time, the popemobile has been based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/23\/24134951\/mercedes-g-wagen-electric-eqg-price-specs-photos\">Mercedes\u2019 G-Class wagon<\/a>. And now, for the first time, it wil be operating without any pollution, powered by the company\u2019s EV technology. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cWith the new Popemobile, Pope Francis is the first pope to be traveling in a fully electric Mercedes-Benz when making public appearances,\u201d CEO Ola Kallenius, who personally delivered the vehicle to Pope Francis this week. \u201cThis is a special honor for our company, and I would like to thank His Holiness for his trust. In the rear, the bench seat was replaced by an elevated, swiveling single seat, so the pope can face his followers from all sides. Two other seats were included behind the pope\u2019s spot for additional passengers. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">This is the first all-electric popemobile, but it isn\u2019t Pope Francis\u2019 first experience with zero-emission transportation. The Vatican was gifted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-19508637\">a Renault Kangoo electric van in 2012<\/a>, but it wasn\u2019t used for official transport. Pope Francis was driven around in a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai in Japan in 2019. The now-defunct EV startup Fisker even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/6\/22\/22526209\/fisker-electric-popemobile-papal-transport-ocean-suv-vatican\">proposed building one<\/a> after founder Henrik Fisker met briefly with Pope Francis in 2021.
