{"id":133800,"date":"2024-12-06T02:28:48","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T19:28:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=133800"},"modified":"2024-12-06T02:28:48","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T19:28:48","slug":"boeing-plea-deal-related-to-max-crashes-rejected-by-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=133800","title":{"rendered":"Boeing plea deal related to Max crashes rejected by judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\">New York<\/span><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bm9892003n26p2220y1pc9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A federal judge on Thursday rejected a plea agreement between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/06\/business\/ntsb-boeing-alaska-door-plug-blowout-faa\/index.html\">Boeing<\/a> and the US government after the company said it would plead guilty to deceiving the Federal Aviation Administration ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/10\/africa\/ethiopian-airlines-crash-boeing-max-8-intl\/index.html\">two fatal 737 Max crashes<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bmo4xe000c3b6mlt3rzhmf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rejection by US District Court Judge Reed O\u2019Connor citied his problems with the selection process for a independent monitor required in the plea deal to oversee safety and quality improvement at Boeing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bmaqsk0000356mfu5sao9p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Boeing agreed in July to plead guilty to one charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/08\/business\/boeing-doj-criminal-charges\/index.html\">Under the plea agreement<\/a> it would pay up to $487 million in fines \u2014 a fraction of the $24.8 billion that families of victims of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/10\/africa\/ethiopian-airlines-crash-boeing-max-8-intl\/index.html\">two crashes<\/a> want the company to pay.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bngpj9000p3b6mp64scn5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            O\u2019Connor had problems with the idea that the Justice Department, not the court, would have approval over the selection of the monitor and how Boeing had performed under an earlier settlement with the Justice Department in January 2021 over the same charges. That agreement had deferred prosecution until the safety issues were again raised by a door plug blowing off a 737 Max plane flown by Alaska Airlines in January.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bni0cz00003b6me7ll8g41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is fair to say the government\u2019s attempt to ensure compliance has failed,\u201d O\u2019Connor wrote in his opinion. \u201cAt this point, the public interest requires the court to step in. Marginalizing the court in the selection and monitoring of the independent monitor as the plea agreement does undermines public confidence in Boeing\u2019s probation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bnu0yz00053b6m0lldrz2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of O\u2019Connor\u2019s problems with the plea agreement was that the Justice Department had said Boeing and Justice would have to consider race when hiring the independent monitor. But he also was upset that the court did not have a role in the selection process.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bmylys0005356mfmjgi2pe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The families argued that the amount of the fine amounted to a sweetheart deal for Boeing, letting it off the hook for the two fatal crashes that were caused by a design flaw on the planes. They argue that Boeing\u2019s previous profits on every plane sold would allow for a much larger fine than the one the Justice Department argues it can justify under the plea agreement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bn00y300053b6mmge2srtu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRejection of the plea deal is an important victory of the families in this case and, more broadly, crime victims\u2019 interests in the criminal justice process,\u201d said Paul Cassell, attorney for family members of crash victims, in a statement. \u201cNo longer can federal prosecutors and high-powered defense attorney craft backroom deals and just expect judges to approve them. Victims can object \u2013 and when they have good reasons for striking a plea, judges will response.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bn3b0p000d3b6m1vuqgrvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis order should lead to a significant renegotiation of the plea deal to reflect the 346 deaths Boeing criminally caused and put in place proper monitoring of Boeing to ensure that it never again commits a crime like this in the future,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bn6a2l000i3b6m7vn5o61n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bnpa6s00023b6mbtb8rk5j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under the July plea agreement Boeing also agreed to spend $455 million on its compliance and safety programs over the next three years, which the government said would represent a 75% increase over what the company was spending annually on those programs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bnu1u100073b6msclejdaa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the biggest change under the plea agreement was that Boeing agreed to operate under the supervision of a court-appointed monitor for a period of three years to make sure it improved the quality and safety of its aircraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bnu1u100093b6m8l7nqhyb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The plea represented yet another black eye for the company after a series problems, ranging from embarrassing to tragic, for the company over the last six years. And it was a severe blow to the reputation of Boeing, a company once known for the quality and safety of its commercial aircraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bnw3xf000d3b6mnxgp0mbw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the charges, the company defrauded the Federal Aviation Administration during the process of certifying the 737 Max to carry its first passengers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bo2tg8000i3b6m9h5xirth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The plane started service in 2017, but the two fatal crashes \u2013 in October 2018 and March of 2019 \u2013 led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/13\/politics\/donald-trump-boeing-faa\/index.html\">20-month grounding<\/a> of the jets, and investigations revealed a design flaw in its autopilot system.
