B\ufeffut those alone did not explain the unusually rapid temperature rise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f8400043b6mondr56le@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now a new study \ufeffpublished Thursday in the journal Science says it has identified the missing part of the puzzle: clouds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f8400053b6m99eera98@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To be more specific, the rapid surge in warming was supercharged by a dearth of low-lying clouds over the oceans, according to the research \u2014 findings which may have alarming implications for future warming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f8400063b6mhb5zc2dp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In simple terms, fewer bright, low clouds mean the planet \u201chas darkened,\u201d allowing it to absorb more sunlight, said Helge Goessling, a report author and climate physicist at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f8400073b6m54uyz9uq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This phenomenon is called \u201calbedo\u201d and refers to the ability of surfaces to reflect the sun\u2019s energy back into space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f8400083b6mzx4yj5vs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Earth\u2019s albedo has been declining since the 1970s, according to the report, due in part to the melting of light-colored snow and sea ice, exposing darker land and water which absorb more of the sun\u2019s energy, heating up the planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f8400093b6mne80utf5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Low clouds also feed into this effect as they reflect away sunlight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4bfcfve001h3b6muft2ctes@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The scientists scoured NASA satellite data, weather data and climate models and found the decline in low clouds reduced<strong> <\/strong>the planet\u2019s albedo to record lows last year. Areas including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/20\/europe\/marine-heatwave-north-atlantic-climate-scn-intl\/index.html\">parts of the North Atlantic Ocean<\/a> experienced a particularly significant fall, the study found.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000a3b6mbhb3lv8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last year fits into a decade-long decline of low cloud cover, Goessling told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000b3b6m4uur35dq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What the study can\u2019t yet explain for certain is why this is happening. \u201cThis is such a complex beast and so hard to disentangle,\u201d Goessling said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000c3b6mquf5qy6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He believes it is likely the result of a combination of factors. The first is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/26\/china\/shipping-pollution-global-warming-climate-intl\/index.html\">reduction in shipping pollution<\/a> due to regulations aimed at reducing the industry\u2019s harmful sulfur emissions. While this has been a win for human health, this type of pollution was also helping cool the planet by brightening clouds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000d3b6mbthe406d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Natural climate variabilities, including changing ocean patterns, may also have contributed. But Goessling points to a third, more alarming factor: global warming itself.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000e3b6m6lzrprw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Low-level clouds tend to thrive in a cool and moist lower atmosphere. As the planet\u2019s surface heats up, this can cause them to thin or dissipate entirely, setting up a complicated feedback loop where low clouds are disappearing because of global warming, and their disappearance then drives further warming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000f3b6muee2mqm5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If this is happening, future warming projections may be underestimated and \u201cwe should expect rather intense warming in the future,\u201d Goessling said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000g3b6msx2qftnd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mark Zalinka, an atmospheric scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory who was not involved in the study, said \u201cthe fact that clouds play a key role in the story makes sense, as they essentially act as Earth\u2019s sunscreen.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000h3b6mjxl7mjv3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Small changes in cloud cover can \u201cdrastically change Earth\u2019s albedo,\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000i3b6mv4tt19uj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tapio Schneider, a climate scientist at the California Institute of Technology, said the worrying implication of the research is if global warming is responsible for a substantial amount of cloud cover change, \u201cwe may see stronger global warming than previously predicted.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4be8f84000j3b6msdr0s6vh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clouds may seem simple, even mundane, but they are endlessly complex and scientists remain far from unraveling how they behave.
