{"id":133908,"date":"2024-12-06T09:08:36","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T02:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=133908"},"modified":"2024-12-06T09:08:36","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T02:08:36","slug":"south-koreas-ruling-party-head-supports-suspending-yoons-powers-boosting-chances-of-impeachment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=133908","title":{"rendered":"South Korea&#8217;s ruling party head supports suspending Yoon&#8217;s powers, boosting chances of impeachment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>SEOUL, South Korea (AP) \u2014 South Korea\u2019s ruling party chief showed support Friday for suspending the constitutional powers of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-martial-law-president-impeachment-53d787e9f04d32615e83aade47412174\">President Yoon Suk Yeol<\/a><\/span> for imposing martial law this week, in a bombshell reversal that makes Yoon\u2019s impeachment more likely. <\/p>\n<p>Opposition parties parties are pushing for a parliamentary vote on Yoon\u2019s impeachment on Saturday, calling his short-lived martial law declaration \u201cunconstitutional, illegal rebellion or coup.\u201d But they need support from some ruling party members to get the two-thirds majority needed to pass the impeachment motion. <\/p>\n<p>During a party meeting, People Power Party leader Han Dong-hun stressed the need to suspend Yoon\u2019s presidential duties and power swiftly, saying he poses a \u201csignificant risk of extreme actions, like reattempting to impose martial law, which could potentially put the Republic of Korea and its citizens in great danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Han said he had received intelligence that Yoon had ordered the country\u2019s defense counterintelligence commander to arrest and detain unspecified key politicians based on accusations of \u201canti-state activities\u201d during martial law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my judgment that an immediate suspension of President Yoon Suk Yeol\u2019s official duties is necessary to protect the Republic of Korea and its people,\u201d Han said.<\/p>\n<p>Han on Thursday had said he would work to defeat the impeachment motion even though he criticized Yoon\u2019s martial law declaration as \u201cunconstitutional.\u201d Han said there was a need to \u201cprevent damage to citizens and supporters caused by unprepared chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Impeaching Yoon would require support from 200 of its 300 members. The opposition parties who jointly brought the impeachment motion have 192 seats combined. PPP has 108 lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Han was previously regarded as a close associate of Yoon as they spent years working together as prosecutors and he served as Yoon\u2019s first justice minister. But after Han entered party politics and became PPP leader, their ties soured badly as they differ over how to handle scandals involving Yoon and his wife. <\/p>\n<p>Han leads a minority faction within the ruling party, and 18 lawmakers in his faction voted with opposition lawmakers to overturn Yoon\u2019s martial law decree. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-martial-law-north-korea-emergency-b310df4fece42c27051f58b8951f346f\">Martial law<\/a><\/span> ultimately lasted about six hours, after the quick overrule by the National Assembly forced Yoon\u2019s Cabinet to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-yoon-martial-law-997c22ac93f6a9bece68454597e577c1\">lift<\/a><\/span> it before daybreak Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>If Yoon is impeached, he would be suspended until the Constitutional Court rules on whether to remove him from office or restore his presidential power. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the country\u2019s No. 2 official, would take over presidential responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>The main liberal opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung said in a televised speech Friday that it was crucial to suspend Yoon as \u201cquickly as possible.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Lee said Yoon\u2019s martial law enforcement amounted to \u201crebellion and also a self-coup.\u201d He said Yoon\u2019s move caused serious damage to the country\u2019s image and paralyzed foreign policy, pointing to criticism coming out of the Biden administration and foreign leaders canceling their visits to South Korea. <\/p>\n<p>Yoon has made no immediate response to Han\u2019s comments. He hasn\u2019t made public appearances since he made a televised announcement that his martial law decree was lifted. But his office said Thursday that Yoon accepted the resignation offer of Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, who opposition parties and Han alleged recommended the martial law imposition to the president.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor General Shim Woo Jung told reporters Friday that the prosecution plans to investigate rebellion charges against Yoon following complaints filed by the opposition, which claims his stunt amounted to a \u201cself-coup.\u201d While the president mostly enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office, the protection does not extend to allegations of rebellion or treason.
