Being more online, of course, has allowed her to sustain and profit from her fame, though it has also led to some curious endorsements \u2014 Welch <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HalieyWelchX\/status\/1827457362359435649\" target=\"_blank\">regularly touts<\/a> the greatness of X (formerly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/twitter\/\">Twitter<\/a>), its owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/elon-musk\/\">Elon Musk<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tesla\/\">Tesla<\/a>\u2018s troubled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cybertruck\/\">Cybertruck<\/a>, to take a handful of interrelated examples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlong the way, Welch has also found herself enmeshed in the world of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cryptocurrency\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cryptocurrency\" data-tag=\"cryptocurrency\">cryptocurrency<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HalieyWelchX\/status\/1854566321087709633\" target=\"_blank\">boosting bitcoin<\/a>, which she has invested in. Unsurprisingly for a woman who bills herself as \u201cQueen of Memes,\u201d she also owns some Dogecoin, a so-called \u201cmeme coin\u201d based on the iconic \u201cdoge\u201d meme of a Shiba Inu. (She bought it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HalieyWelchX\/status\/1856845857787711864\" target=\"_blank\">because of Musk\u2019s enthusiasm<\/a> for the meme and asset, which have now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/elon-musk-doge-meme-history-trump-1235165004\/\">lent their name<\/a> to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/trump-musk-ramaswamy-doge-project-2025-1235169916\/\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a>, or DOGE, a commission he is set to run for President-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>.) Being a meme herself, it was perhaps inevitable that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/crypto\/\" id=\"auto-tag_crypto\" data-tag=\"crypto\">crypto<\/a> entrepreneurs would see the opportunity to leverage Welch\u2019s brand for a new coin in a similar vein. And so, on Wednesday, she and a team of advisors launched $HAWK, on the blockchain platform Solana, while promising that it was compliant with securities laws and certainly not <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/crypto\/2024\/12\/04\/hawk-tuah-girl-haliey-welch-launches-crypto-memecoin-solana\/\" target=\"_blank\">a cash grab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOne day later, there is virtually nobody in the crypto industry who believes that. With anticipation high, the value of the coin exploded by 900 percent in initial trading on Wednesday, bringing the market capitalization of $HAWK to nearly half a billion dollars. Then, just as quickly, the price collapsed by approximately 95 percent, wiping out retail investors in hours. (The market cap has since slightly recovered, reaching $28 million.) Accusations started flying, with many crypto observers alleging that $HAWK was a pump-and-dump scheme, or a rug pull \u2014 when developers build hype for a crypto project to raise money only to liquidate their position and walk away, with others left holding worthless tokens.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOf particular interest as the meme coin crashed was alleged evidence of $HAWK insiders <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZeusLFG\/status\/1864448873881592212?t=xE9tfOWz0wCGI8CdgaZCng&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\">offloading their stakes<\/a> for huge sums, and some buyers known as \u201csnipers\u201d quickly amassing a vast majority of available coins that they soon unloaded for instant profit. One crypto wallet, as the publication <em>Cointelegraph<\/em> found, was able to grab <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/hawk-tuah-memecoin-dumps-90-percent-outrage-token-launch-insider\" target=\"_blank\">17.5 percent<\/a> of the supply and then flip it for $1.3 million within just 90 minutes. According to the blockchain data analyst Bubblemaps, 96 percent of $HAWK was concentrated in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bubblemaps\/status\/1864439521523196046\" target=\"_blank\">one cluster<\/a> of related wallets as of Wednesday afternoon, indicating a high degree of coordination in these transactions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWelch and her team attempted some damage control on Wednesday evening in an audio event on X Spaces, but they did not manage to allay suspicions of a scam as investors began <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/imperooterxbt\/status\/1864469664249569727\" target=\"_blank\">filing complaints<\/a> with the Securities and Exchange Commission and at least one law firm <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BurwickLaw\/status\/1864467285072597184\" target=\"_blank\">advertised its services<\/a> to those affected. Welch was mostly silent during the hour-long conversation, allowing her crypto partners at the platform overHere, which had launched $HAWK, and an individual known as \u201cDoc Hollywood\u201d to answer questions. Pressed on what had gone wrong, the men were talked in evasive circles, insisting that the team of 18 people behind $HAWK had not sold their tokens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe discussion turned contentious when Stephen Findeisen, a YouTuber who goes by Coffeezilla and is known for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/coffeezilla-youtube-busting-crypto-scam-1234711515\/\">hard-nosed investigations of crypto fraud<\/a>, was allowed to speak. \u201cThis is one of the most miserable, horrible launches I\u2019ve ever seen in my life,\u201d Findeisen said, prompting Welch to interject, seemingly unaware of his work, \u201cOkay, then why the fuck are you on?\u201d Findeisen went on to grill Hollywood about who had received nearly $2 million from the unusually high transaction fees for $HAWK trades; Hollywood said it went to the foundation in the Cayman Islands that had developed the project but would not give any more details on the organization. He and an overHere representative vowed to produce evidence to counter allegations of improper financial activity, though, as of the following afternoon, have not. He advised Welch to immediately fire whoever had convinced her to be the face of the \u201cmismanaged\u201d cryptocurrency, saying the $HAWK disaster was another example of influencers entering the crypto space without an understanding of how to perform due diligence and protect their audiences. She did not acknowledge the advice, but 20 minutes later, Welch abruptly cut in over a technical question and said, \u201cAnywho, I\u2019m gonna go to bed, and I\u2019ll see you guys tomorrow,\u201d bringing the interrogation to an end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA representative for Welch did not respond to a request for comment from <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, but the Spaces discussion was evidently damning enough that she removed the recording from her X account. (It remains available through a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4IVpzmkHBEU\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube upload<\/a>.) Findeisen hosted a Spaces debriefing on his own account afterward, continuing to hammer the $HAWK developers for dodging his questions, adding that they had muted him at times. He also lamented that it was likely not experienced crypto investors harmed by the crash but newcomers to the scene. \u201cThe most insidious part of what they said was, we\u2019re targeting regular people, regular fans,\u201d he said of the $HAWK team. \u201cWe want to onboard [Welch\u2019s] fans to crypto. And unfortunately, that\u2019s where you get some really sad stories of people actually putting their money into these things and not knowing better.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn Thursday evening, Findeisen released a video covering the entire situation. It  included screenshots of text messages from Welch\u2019s entertainment lawyer revealing that she had received $125,000 advance for marketing the token from a unspecified company, and was to receive 50 percent of net proceeds from that company after third-party expenses and costs for the development and launch had been covered. In a follow-up message, Welch\u2019s attorney added, \u201cShe truly didn\u2019t intend to fleece fans.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"exposing the hawk tuah scam\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zUHq8AWR1Rg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI think there were lots of signs this was not going to work,\u201d Findeisen tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cThey sold 17 percent of the tokens to insiders who had no lock-up for their tokens, while they only released 3 percent to the public for trading. I get the sense that Welch was misinformed, but also that Welch saw dollar signs and didn\u2019t ask enough questions. Additionally, she didn\u2019t seem to take it too seriously when she was confronted. I hope that she acknowledges the harm of what she did, intentional or not, and takes accountability to help her fans who\u00a0lost money.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA couple of defensive X posts from Welch and overHere on Wednesday were contradicted by Community Notes that claimed \u2014 in a mocking reference to the name of her podcast \u2014 that Welch would soon \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HalieyWelchX\/status\/1864448384326881713\" target=\"_blank\">have to \u2018talk tuah\u2019 judge<\/a>.\u201d She didn\u2019t post anything else on Thursday as jokes about an eventual jail sentence continued to spread.
