In practice, that meant that along with the show\u2019s baroquely violent fight scenes, on occasion, the characters are depicted \u2026 well \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cFucking?\u201d Gunn offers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYes, yes they are. In Episode 2, for example, the human leader of the Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. (<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/frank-grillo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_frank-grillo\" data-tag=\"frank-grillo\">Frank Grillo<\/a>), finally gives in to the relentless flirtation by Princess Ilana Rostovic (<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/maria-bakalova\/\" id=\"auto-tag_maria-bakalova\" data-tag=\"maria-bakalova\">Maria Bakalova<\/a>), heir to the throne of the fictional Eastern European country of Pokolistan and the person Rick and the Commandos were sent to protect. After Rick wins a bruising late night brawl with one of his charges, Ilana tends to his wounds while Rick is stripped to just his boxer briefs. One thing leads to another, and \u2026 well \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re fucking in the bathroom,\u201d Gunn says. The scene is played for comedy, of course, as well as an opportunity to demonstrate that the upstanding Rick is still capable of succumbing to an ethical lapse. But mostly, Gunn saw it as a chance to treat his characters as flesh-and-blood human beings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re two adults that are attracted to each other, and they\u2019re both very good-looking people,\u201d he says. \u201cLet\u2019s just show \u2019em having sex in the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCapturing this scene with his actors, however, was anything but sexy. Grillo and Bakalova recorded it together over Zoom, with Gunn directing them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was hilarious,\u201d Bakalova says. \u201cI was in one country, Frank was in a different country. And we just had to make <em>sounds<\/em>. Because both of these characters are very aggressive, it was long minutes of us kissing our hands, because you have to recreate the sound of kissing. And it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, what am I even doing?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJust thinking about the sequence causes Gunn to double over in laughter. \u201cI had to put myself on mute because I was laughing so hard,\u201d he says. \u201cI have video. It\u2019s Maria and Frank making out with their hands and moaning and smacking their tongues against their fists. I will post that at the time that the episode comes out, because it\u2019s really funny.\u201d (Gunn hasn\u2019t yet done so, but we\u2019ve been checking.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBeyond the awkwardness factor, recording the sequence proved to be an unexpected challenge for the actors because it was so over-the-top. \u201cI don\u2019t make those sounds so consistently throughout the course of the session of sex,\u201d Grillo says with a sheepish grin. \u201cWhen we were doing this, I was going, \u2018This sounds ridiculous. Who has sex like this?\u2019 And yet I watch it and I go, wow, it works great.
