public health services, also found that <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4ge6q1wzk0o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">skin cancer remained the most common cancer<!-- --><\/a> in the islands, with more people getting it than on the mainland.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Elizabet Gomes Dos Santos, oncology lead at Jersey\u2019s Health and Community Services (HCS), said the report demonstrated the &#8220;ongoing commitment to understanding and addressing cancer at all levels&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">While lung cancer killed the highest number of people on both islands, prostate cancer had a slightly higher mortality rate in Guernsey when the figures were adjusted to take account of people&#8217;s ages, and was second to lung cancer in Jersey.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The report said people were more likely to get lung cancer on the islands than in the South West, but the figures were roughly the same as the England average.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Across all cancers Guernsey and Jersey had broadly-similar rates compared to England and the South West, but there were some differences on individual cancers.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Guernsey&#8217;s head of public health intelligence Jenny Cataroche said the islands could &#8220;draw reassurance&#8221; from the figures.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As well as skin cancers, head and neck cancers were more common in both islands compared to England, while breast cancer rates were higher in Jersey than England.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Uterus cancer was lower in Guernsey than England and the South West, while leukaemia was lower in Jersey compared to the mainland.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Prevention<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Smoking causes <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/health-professional\/cancer-statistics\/statistics-by-cancer-type\/lung-cancer\/risk-factors\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 85% of lung cancer deaths<!-- --><\/a>, according to Cancer Research UK.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Guernsey recently introduced a <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cpvzngy1lw9o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">ban on smoking in cars carrying children<!-- --><\/a>, while other options have been floated such as a <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cg64zvv4x14o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">ban on beach smoking<!-- --><\/a> or an <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cv2rzze3p8po\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">increase in the smoking age<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Jersey has had a <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-jersey-34113937\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">similar car smoking ban<!-- --><\/a> since 2015 and <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cv2rzze3p8po\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">banned branding on cigarettes<!-- --><\/a> in 2022.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A spokesperson for Jersey&#8217;s Public Health said the higher skin cancer rates in the island were mainly down &#8220;UV exposure through sunlight or sun beds&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Diane Mathews, from Guernsey&#8217;s Public Health Services, said: &#8220;That&#8217;s why it is so important for islanders to enjoy the sun safely.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She said it was possible to prevent cancer by covering up, wearing sun cream and avoiding the sun between 11:00 and 15:00 on sunny days.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ms Mathews said early detection was also vital, adding people should know &#8220;what is normal&#8221; for their skin and consult a doctor if anything changed.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Screening services<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The report is the second in a series of catch-up reports designed to bring the islands&#8217; cancer data up to date, with the final one due in late 2025.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It is the first report to have data about which stage each of the four most common cancers is diagnosed at, from stage one (limited spread) to four (very wide spread).<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ms Cataroche said the new data would help health professionals understand how many cancers were being detected early on the islands.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Gomes Dos Santos, who is also chair of Jersey&#8217;s Cancer Strategy Implementation Committee, said the research would leave the islands &#8220;better equipped&#8221;
