The Chinese diplomat was given 24 hours to leave the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">In a curt statement, Paraguay\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had revoked the visa of Xu Wei, a senior Chinese envoy to Latin America who was in Paraguay <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-sake-unesco-world-heritage-intangible-cultural-ffb84ba291342e62bf0e588729538351\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:for an annual UNESCO meeting;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">for an annual UNESCO meeting<\/a>, declaring him persona non grata \u201cover interference in internal affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The day before, Xu skipped the UNESCO session and instead turned up at Congress in Paraguay\u2019s capital of Asunci\u00f3n, where he caused a diplomatic stir by calling on Paraguay to ditch Taiwan, the self-governing democratic island of 23 million people that China claims as its territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Paraguay is the only nation in South America and one of just 12 worldwide that recognizes Taiwan as a country.
