Foreign government officials have been known to express jealousy over his skills, and one prominent economist refers to him as a \u201cnational treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Meet FRED, a 33-year-old data tool from St. Louis, Mo., and the economics world\u2019s most unlikely celebrity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even if you have not interacted with FRED yourself, there is a good chance you\u2019ve encountered him without knowing it. The tool\u2019s signature baby blue graphs dot social media and crop up on many of the world\u2019s most popular news websites. (Paul Krugman, an opinion writer for The New York Times, has referred to FRED as \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/08\/my-friend-fred\/\" title=\"\">my friend<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many people feel that way about FRED. The website had nearly 15 million users last year, and it is on track for even more in 2024, up from fewer than 400,000 as recently as 2009. Their reasons for clicking are diverse: FRED users are coming for freshly released unemployment data, to check in on egg inflation or to find out whether business is booming in Memphis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That appeal crosses political lines. Larry Kudlow, who directed the National Economic Council during the first Trump administration, has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/larry_kudlow\/status\/972201980490932227\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlanReynoldsEcn\/status\/964656409110605824\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">retweeted<\/a> FRED charts. Groups as disparate as the spending-focused <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/364935626924626\/?hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&amp;multi_permalinks=8871700642914706\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Alaskans for a Sustainable Budget<\/a> and the pro-worker advocacy organization <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.employamerica.org\/content\/files\/2022\/06\/Floor-It-Framework.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Employ America<\/a> have used its charts to back up their arguments.
