{"id":134088,"date":"2024-12-06T20:19:46","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T13:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=134088"},"modified":"2024-12-06T20:19:46","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T13:19:46","slug":"rebels-near-homs-as-thousands-flee-monitor-says-dw-12-06-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=134088","title":{"rendered":"Rebels near Homs as thousands flee, monitor says \u2013 DW \u2013 12\/06\/2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Insurgents\u00a0led by the Islamist faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are advancing on the central Syrian city of Homs, the UK-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Observatory said the insurgents were now just 5 km (3 miles) from the outskirts of the key city, which\u00a0provides a link\u00a0between\u00a0the capital, Damascus, and the north.<\/p>\n<p>The southward march of the rebels comes after they captured the\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/syria-assad-under-pressure-in-aleppo\/a-70948527\">northern city of Aleppo<\/a> and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/syria-islamist-rebels-eye-more-gains-after-seizing-hama\/a-70966612\">Hama in the center<\/a> in what have been devastating blows to the power of autocratic President Bashar Assad.<\/p>\n<p>De facto HTS leader\u00a0Abu Mohammed al-Golani\u00a0said the aim\u00a0of the offensive was to overthrow Assad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we talk about objectives, the goal of the revolution remains the overthrow of this regime. it said.<\/p>\n<p>It added that controlling Homs would allow the rebels to &#8220;cut off the main road leading to the Syrian coast,&#8221;\u00a0the stronghold of the Alawite minority to which\u00a0Assad belongs.<\/p>\n<p>Observatory head\u00a0Abdel Rahman told the German dpa news agency that\u00a0the fight for Homs was\u00a0&#8220;crucial&#8221; because &#8220;whoever wins this battle will rule Syria in the future.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span data-teams=\"true\"\/>Who is behind the insurgency?<\/h2>\n<p>Syria descended into civil war in 2012\u00a0after a brutal\u00a0government crackdown on largely peaceful pro-democracy protests in the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Various state-sponsored and non-state actors were drawn into the ensuing conflicts, with notably Russia and Iran stepping in to aid Assad in suppressing the revolt.<\/p>\n<p>With their aid, Assad succeeded in bringing two-thirds of the country back under his control.<\/p>\n<p>However, now, the\u00a0pro-Turkish\u00a0HTS, previously affiliated with the terrorist group al-Qaeda, has become the driving force behind the\u00a0new wave of insurgency.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0HTS controls Syria&#8217;s northeast region of Idlib,\u00a0which had\u00a0become the country&#8217;s last opposition bastion.<\/p>\n<p>The offensive comes at a time when Russia and Iran, Assad&#8217;s major allies,<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/is-russia-able-to-fight-in-both-ukraine-and-syria\/a-70973239\">have had their attention diverted by conflicts elsewhere<\/a>, likely weakening the Syrian army&#8217;s fighting power.<\/p>\n<p>While HTS\u00a0is trying to capture areas controled by Assad, the offensive can also be seen in the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/recep-tayyip-erdogan-has-interests-in-syrias-reignited-war\/a-70962033\">context of Turkish efforts to target majority Kurds in the country&#8217;s northeast.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turkey, which borders\u00a0Syria to\u00a0the north and largely opposes\u00a0the government in Damascus,\u00a0has regularly attacked\u00a0the Kurdish autonomous region and targeted\u00a0groups Ankara has labeled &#8220;terrorist,&#8221; such\u00a0the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday he hoped the Syrian rebels would\u00a0continue to advance\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The advances of the opposition are continuing as of now &#8230;
