The locations would be the first since Chi-Chi\u2019s filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Michael McDermott, the son of Chi-Chi\u2019s founder, said he struck an agreement with <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nc-state-wire-gulf-of-mexico-tx-state-wire-us-news-ap-top-news-629ba3abde11b6213480bc81d69ab332\">Hormel Foods<\/a><\/span> to open the restaurants. Austin, Minnesota-based Hormel owns the Chi-Chi\u2019s trademark and produces Chi-Chi\u2019s-branded <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nc-state-wire-gulf-of-mexico-tx-state-wire-us-news-ap-top-news-629ba3abde11b6213480bc81d69ab332\">chips and salsas<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chi-Chi\u2019s brand is one of the most beloved, respected, and well-known names in the Mexican food category,\u201d Hormel said Thursday in a statement. \u201cThe legacy and spirit of the brand remain strong, and we\u2019re excited about the upcoming relaunch of Chi-Chi\u2019s restaurant locations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDermott, a restauranteur who also founded Kona Grill and Rojo Mexican Grill, didn\u2019t say how many locations he planned to open or where. McDermott said the restaurants would be an updated version of the classic Chi-Chi\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen the impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the country and believe there is a strong opportunity to bring the brand back in a way that resonates with today\u2019s consumer,\u201d McDermott said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Chi-Chi\u2019s was founded in 1975 by Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee. It grew rapidly in the 1990s, reaching more than 200 locations nationwide. But by 2003 it had filed for bankruptcy after going through a series of ownership changes and struggling with increasing competition.<\/p>\n<p>Around the time of its bankruptcy filing, Chi-Chi\u2019s reputation was also married by a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/c77e8f30ad8b4d30a5309be1ab5217c1\">hepatitis A outbreak<\/a><\/span> at one of its restaurants in Pennsylvania.
