The EV1 became an unnecessary cost.

The cars’ three-year lease agreements expired in the early 2000s, but GM canceled the program and took its EV1s back. In 2005, NPR reporter Luke Burbank visited a GM facility in Southern California storing dozens of repossessed EV1s. The car’s supporters held vigil outside.

“We call that EV1 death row,” said Chelsea Sexton, a former GM employee who worked on the EV1 program and was critical of the company’s move to stop making electric vehicles.

“It absolutely breaks my heart,” Sexton told NPR. “I helped put these cars on the road in the first place, and now they’re taking them away from me and from all the other drivers that had them at one point.”

        <picture><source srcset="https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/400/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg 400w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/600/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg 600w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/800/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg 800w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/900/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg 900w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/1200/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg 1200w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/1600/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg 1600w,
https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/1800/quality/85/format/webp/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg 1800w" data-template="https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims3/default/strip/false/crop/2464x1648+0+0/resize/{width}/quality/{quality}/format/{format}/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F22%2F74%2F35aefa8f491fa04c5eacd382104c%2Fgettyimages-564050623.jpg" sizes="(min-width: 1300px) 763px, (min-width: 1025px) calc(100vw -
