In the fourth quarter of 2024, when consumers largely look to buy and gift AAA titles, there\u2019s no new generation of consoles \u2014 usually the driving force behind game purchases \u2014 on the market. And <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/xbox\/\" id=\"auto-tag_xbox\" data-tag=\"xbox\">Xbox<\/a> is in the best position to get the Christmas cash with the Dec. 9 launch of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/indiana-jones-and-the-great-circle\/\" id=\"auto-tag_indiana-jones-and-the-great-circle\" data-tag=\"indiana-jones-and-the-great-circle\">Indiana Jones and the Great Circle<\/a>,\u201d the industry\u2019s biggest new game of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDeveloped by Bethesda\u2019s MachineGames in partnership with Lucasfilm, \u201cGreat Circle\u201d has been in the works since before Microsoft\u2019s acquisition of Bethesda parent ZeniMax in 2021 and has been a hotly anticipated title over the five years it\u2019s been in development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been an Indiana Jones fan my entire life. When I saw the movie, I believed it was all real, and I was just enamored with \u2018Raiders of the Lost Ark\u2019 since it came out,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/bethesda-game-studios\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bethesda-game-studios\" data-tag=\"bethesda-game-studios\">Bethesda Game Studios<\/a> director and executive producer Todd Howard, who created the concept for \u201cIndiana Jones and the Great Circle,\u201d told <em>Variety<\/em>. \u201cThat movie has remained my favorite movie of all time. I named my dog Indiana. I got the jacket, I got all the stuff. I\u2019ve loved the character and the world, which I think is important, that sort of pulpy adventure world of the \u201930s, that kind of genre. And I\u2019d always thought about what kind of game would I like to play in Indiana Jones? And I also like these mysteries of the world. I stumbled upon this one, which is The Great Circle \u2014 which is a thing, I didn\u2019t invent it \u2014 that thought, this would be great for an Indiana Jones video game when I read about it, and thought about what the mystery could lead to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe \u201cGreat Circle\u201d at the center of Howard\u2019s Indy game is a collection sites around the world that mysteriously form\u00a0a perfect circle\u00a0when connected together on a map. Howard pitched the idea to what was then LucasArts in 2009, and due to complications around who would publish the game, the idea fell through. But in 2019, Howard\u2019s project resurfaced when his friend John Drake, who previously worked as an exec at Sony, moved over to Disney\u2019s gaming division and got the \u201cGreat Circle\u201d boulder rolling again with Lucasfilm Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow, \u201cIndiana Jones and the Great Circle\u201d is Xbox\u2019s highest priority for 2024 and comes on the heels of the Oct. 25 launch of the latest addition to the Activision-produced \u201cCall of Duty\u201d series, \u201cBlack Ops 6,\u201d which came through Microsoft\u2019s massive Activision Blizzard deal that closed last year. Microsoft said \u201cBlack Ops 6\u201d had the biggest opening weekend of any game in the franchise and has maintained that status over the past month \u2014 ranking No. 1 in total players, hours played and total matches. The company didn\u2019t release sales figures for \u201cBlack Ops 6,\u201d but said with its release, the \u201cCall of Duty\u201d franchise has now sold more than 500 million copies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe momentum has put Xbox in front of longtime rival PlayStation. \u201cFrom a pure content perspective, we must conclude that Microsoft\u2019s portfolio is now quite a bit stronger than Sony\u2019s,\u201d MoffettNathanson analyst Clay Griffin wrote in a Nov. 26 research note.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cGreat Circle\u201d is the first \u2014 and only \u2014 Indiana Jones game of this size that Lucasfilm Games has greenlit. In the first-person game, set after the events of the 1981 Harrison Ford-starrer \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark,\u201d players go on stealth missions and engage in grand-scale puzzle solving. All told, \u201cGreat Circle\u201d is packed with more than three hours of cinematic-quality scenes that play out the larger plot. It stars gaming industry legend Troy Baker (the voice of Joel in PlayStation\u2019s \u201cThe Last of Us\u201d franchise) as the iconic archaeologist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou really get to inhabit the world of Indiana Jones coming at the end of the year, going into the holidays,\u201d says Matt Booty, Microsoft president of game content and studios. Compared with the rapid-fire, multiplayer action of \u201cBlack Ops,\u201d the Indy title is \u201ca more thoughtful adventure game\u201d \u2014 which Booty says is well suited to the holiday break, when people have more time on their hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn true Indy fashion, Howard says \u201cGreat Circle\u201d kicks off with an impressive set piece: \u201cI wish we could spoil it. I would just say, if you\u2019re an \u2018Indiana Jones\u2019 fan, it\u2019s the opening you\u2019ve wanted.\u201d But from there, the title \u2014 which is packed with nods to the overall franchise, including a reference to Disneyland\u2019s Indiana Jones Adventure ride \u2014 takes its time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe game is pretty slow in its pacing, because it is an adventure game, first and foremost, so we don\u2019t rely so much on action. And I think we have a pacing where these cinematics really fit well into that,\u201d MachineGames executive producer and \u201cGreat Circle\u201d director Jerk\u00a0Gustafsson said. \u201cThe game takes place between \u2018Raiders of the Lost Ark\u2019 and \u2018The Last Crusade,\u2019 so in that timeline. And we specifically looked at \u2018Raiders\u2019 because the character differs a little bit between the movies. What defines him in the game is his obsession with his work. Exploring the past and uncovering history, this led him to where \u2018Raiders of the Lost Ark\u2019 ends, and where \u2018The Great Circle\u2019 starts. And I think that\u2019s been one of those key components that we have been working on for the character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs for who would voice the character \u2014 with 82-year-old \u201cIndiana Jones\u201d star Ford not having been considered an option, given the large age difference between present-day him and the young Dr. Jones in \u201cRaiders\u201d \u2014 Lucasfilm had final say when it came to casting Baker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s the place where we probably have the most input on these games,\u201d Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager Douglas Reilly said. \u201cWe don\u2019t tell the teams how to run development. We don\u2019t tell them how to run their day to day of the business. But when it comes to what touches the IPs, we are very much involved in making sure it looks, feels, sounds like Indiana Jones \u2014 so we approve casting. We get all the way through the process. We get concept art, to modeling, to final art and and obviously, with a game like this in particular, he is the character and you got to get him right, otherwise it doesn\u2019t feel like an Indiana Jones experience. And between the work MachineGames did in representing him physically and the absolutely stunning work Troy has done voicing the character, you forget it\u2019s not Harrison when you play it. He\u2019s that good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs with \u201cBlack Ops 6,\u201d Microsoft is making \u201cGreat Circle\u201d available to subscribers of Xbox Game Pass for no additional charge \u2014 an attempt to mimic Netflix\u2019s model. The Indy game will remain an Xbox and PC exclusive until it comes to PlayStation in spring 2025. The game\u2019s first round of downloadable content (DLC) is set to release at an unspecified date in the new year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe are very much making the [exclusivity and windowing] decisions on a game by game basis,\u201d Booty said. \u201cAnd each of our studios is in a little bit of a different position. There\u2019s also the production timeline on a game, so the decision on spacing comes there first. We want to make sure there\u2019s a great experience for our Xbox players, and then the gap between [when it becomes available on PlayStation] is as much a production decision as it is anything else. This is a game that was in production before we acquired Bethesda, even.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMicrosoft has pivoted away from fighting the console wars \u201cafter a multi-decade history of slugging it out,\u201d says Griffin. As the analyst puts it: Xbox\u2019s strategy of \u201cmoving up in the gaming value chain\u201d as with marquee content like the new Indy game, alongside advancing Game Pass and cloud gaming, is better than trying to \u201cout-console Nintendo or Sony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-text-align-center  \">\n\t<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/vip\/xbox-indiana-jones-great-circle-game-pass-playstation-1236237319?cx_navsource=vip-insertion-text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VIP+ Analysis: Why Xbox\u2019s \u2018Indiana Jones\u2019 Is What Video Gaming Needs to Salvage 2024<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIf \u201cGreat Circle\u201d performs well, it could mean not just holiday success for Xbox, but plans for a larger Indiana Jones gaming franchise between Lucasfilm and MachineGames moving forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cRight now, we\u2019re focused on getting this one to the public and getting to the DLC and making this as successful as we can,\u201d Reilly said. \u201cI think we\u2019re always looking for great stories. And the good news is, there\u2019s a lot of space in between the films where we could tell more and more Indiana Jones stories that I think would be super interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDoes that mean \u201cThe Great Circle\u201d is considered canon to the overall \u201cIndiana Jones\u201d cinematic universe?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSo canon is such a complicated concept. It is an authentic story set between the two movies of \u2018Raiders\u2019 and \u2018The Last Crusade,&#8217;\u201d Reilly said. \u201cWe work closely with the studio and franchise management.
