The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"56\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/chargers\/\">Los Angeles Chargers<\/a>, who last won the division in 2009, are in second place at 8-4. They have a 5 percent chance of overcoming the Chiefs down the home stretch and finishing atop the AFC West, according to <em>The Athletic<\/em>\u2019s playoff projection model.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a long shot. It will become no shot if the Chargers lose to the Chiefs on Sunday night at Arrowhead.<\/p>\n<p>With a win, according to the model, the Chargers would increase their division-winning odds to 13.9 percent. Over their final four games, the Chiefs face a now-feisty <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"38\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/browns\/\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> team, two division leaders in the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/texans\/\">Houston Texans<\/a> (8-5) and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"55\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/steelers\/\">Steelers<\/a> (9-3), and a likely playoff team in the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"40\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/broncos\/\">Denver Broncos<\/a> (8-5). The Chargers, meanwhile, have three of four games against teams without winning records \u2014 the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"60\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/buccaneers\/\">Tampa Bay Buccaneers<\/a> (6-6), <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"49\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/patriots\/\">New England Patriots<\/a> (3-10) and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"53\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/raiders\/\">Las Vegas Raiders<\/a> (2-10). They also face the Broncos.<\/p>\n<p>A simple look at the standings would indicate that the Chiefs, with their one loss, are juggernauts. That is not the case, which makes the Chargers\u2019 division hopes a bit more realistic.<\/p>\n<p>While the Chiefs entered the week tied for the best record in the league, they have a 54-point differential. That ranks 11th in the league. In fact, since 2000, that is the worst point differential among the 23 teams that have started a season 11-1 or better, according to TruMedia. The next closest team in that span? The 2012 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/falcons\/\">Atlanta Falcons<\/a>, who started 11-1 with an 88-point differential. Only three teams since 2000 have started 11-1 or better with a point differential under 100. The Chiefs have pulled off some late-game magic this season.<\/p>\n<p>The Chargers need to defeat them to keep their division dreams alive. That is primarily what is at stake Sunday, as the Chargers and Chiefs meet in one of the best environments in pro football.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5969688\/2024\/12\/04\/week-14-playoff-clinch-berth\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/12\/04143659\/GettyImages-2187766983-1-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">NFL Week 14 playoff scenarios: How 3 more teams can clinch playoff spots<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then there are the less tangible stakes. What would a win at Arrowhead in December, with the postseason on the horizon, mean for what Jim Harbaugh is trying to build in Los Angeles?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in the playoff fight. Good,\u201d Harbaugh said this week. \u201cIt\u2019s on the road. Good. It\u2019s against the Chiefs. Good. Let\u2019s get prepared and get ready to roll.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are some key matchups and storylines.<\/p>\n<p>James missed the Chargers\u2019 Week 4 loss to the Chiefs while serving a suspension. Kelce, the Chiefs\u2019 star tight end, caught seven of his nine targets for 89 yards, his third-best receiving game of the season.<\/p>\n<p>How eager is James for this matchup, considering he had to watch the last game from his couch?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo excited, man,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just ready to go play. Can\u2019t wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James should be one-on-one with Kelce a good amount in this game. Coordinator Jesse Minter has used James as a tight end eraser throughout this season. James has been playing considerably more nickel over the past five weeks. It has become his primary role in Minter\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n<p>Playing James at nickel aligns him closer to the line of scrimmage and, therefore, the ball. He can be more impactful in the run game that way. It also allows him to play press-man coverage on tight ends. James also can play press-man on tight ends when he aligns as the Chargers\u2019 dime player in six defensive back packages, another position closer to the line of scrimmage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5961527\/2024\/12\/01\/chargers-win-tarheeb-still-derwin-james-falcons\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/12\/01201241\/GettyImages-2187750383-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">Tarheeb Still, Derwin James Jr. lift Chargers ever closer to playoff contention<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Chargers have faced a number of the best tight ends in the league this season, and they have kept all of them in check, largely because of how Minter is deploying James. The only tight end to finish with more than 60 yards against the Chargers was Kelce, and James obviously did not play in that game.<\/p>\n<p>The Raiders\u2019 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"Nucw2KOX0WQ15lqu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/brock-bowers-Nucw2KOX0WQ15lqu\/\">Brock Bowers<\/a>, who leads all tight ends with 884 receiving yards, had 58 yards in Week 1. The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"31\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/ari-cardinals\/\">Arizona Cardinals\u2019<\/a> <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"7GHGRFue0VpBCipI\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/trey-mcbride-7GHGRFue0VpBCipI\/\">Trey McBride<\/a>, who is second with 781 yards, had 51 yards in Week 7. The Browns\u2019 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"zRWbKdclapogMzcq\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/david-njoku-zRWbKdclapogMzcq\/\">David Njoku<\/a> had 29 yards in Week 9. The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"33\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/ravens\/\">Baltimore Ravens\u2019<\/a> <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"ivPiSTgSWxTHPDEt\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/mark-andrews-ivPiSTgSWxTHPDEt\/\">Mark Andrews<\/a> had 44 yards in Week 12. Last week, the Falcons\u2019 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"KCIoZkL2iCOFp4x0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/kyle-pitts-KCIoZkL2iCOFp4x0\/\">Kyle Pitts<\/a> did not have a catch on two targets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll those guys prepared me for these moments,\u201d James said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pro Football Focus, James has only given up five completions to tight ends all season \u2014 one to Bowers, one to Andrews, one to the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"35\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/panthers\/\">Carolina Panthers\u2019<\/a> <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"HnxorI9aFq0eeLnE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/tommy-tremble-HnxorI9aFq0eeLnE\/\">Tommy Tremble<\/a> and two to the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"50\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/saints\/\">New Orleans Saints\u2019<\/a> <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"lVqjwWDqum0IC26g\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/juwan-johnson-lVqjwWDqum0IC26g\/\">Juwan Johnson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s one of the best players in the league when he\u2019s doing the things I think that he does really well,\u201d Minter said of James.<\/p>\n<p>James will likely be matched up with Kelce in man coverage in some pivotal moments. (Jamie Squire \/ Getty Images)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Protecting against Chiefs\u2019 pressure packages<\/h2>\n<p>On top of missing James on defense, the Chargers were without both of their starting tackles against the Chiefs in Week 4.<\/p>\n<p>Left tackle <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"3gnvVvVdeznPKuQP\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/rashawn-slater-3gnvVvVdeznPKuQP\/\">Rashawn Slater<\/a> missed the game with a pectoral injury. Right tackle <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"vwl1L70KLc25gNZY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/joe-alt-vwl1L70KLc25gNZY\/\">Joe Alt<\/a> missed the game with a knee injury. The Chargers kicked <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"7h6wScXDu2PcG5YG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/trey-pipkins-iii-7h6wScXDu2PcG5YG\/\">Trey Pipkins III<\/a> out to right tackle from right guard. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"g0L6Cgtt2wrEkwsS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/jamaree-salyer-g0L6Cgtt2wrEkwsS\/\">Jamaree Salyer<\/a> started at left tackle. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"pjyPHCkhg8MPGL7j\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/sam-mustipher-pjyPHCkhg8MPGL7j\/\">Sam Mustipher<\/a> started at right guard. And then <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"9NHrY7HxyKCR40Kh\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/justin-herbert-9NHrY7HxyKCR40Kh\/\">Justin Herbert<\/a> was still severely affected by the high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustin could barely move at the time,\u201d offensive coordinator Greg Roman said this week. \u201cSo I think it\u2019s going to be a very different ball game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid the injuries, the Chargers struggled in pass protection. Herbert was pressured on 51.7 percent of his dropbacks, according to TruMedia, which remains a season high. He could do very little to create when pressure arrived. Defensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"Ckbq2u8Ohir009QP\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/chris-jones-Ckbq2u8Ohir009QP\/\">Chris Jones<\/a> had two third-down sacks, which came on blitzes from the Chiefs defense. They have to be more efficient on early downs. The Chargers rank 31st in offensive success rate on first and second downs, according to TruMedia. If they are inefficient on these downs, that will set up third-and-longs, and Spagnuolo can dial up some exotic looks.<\/p>\n<p>The Chiefs have the third-highest blitz rate in the league at 24.1 percent, according to TruMedia. On third and fourth downs with 8 or more yards to gain, that rate jumps to 48.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry to give your players as many looks as you can in the week and alert them to things that may happen,\u201d Roman said, \u201cand then go play the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5970817\/2024\/12\/05\/chargers-receivers-man-coverage\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/12\/04210037\/USATSI_24887057-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">The Chargers are seeing more man coverage. Do they have the receivers to overcome it?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>A more \u2018methodical\u2019 Chiefs offense<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past two seasons, the Chiefs have pivoted their offensive identity. In quarterback Patrick Mahomes\u2019 first five seasons as a starter, the Chiefs had the most explosive offense in football. They created explosives \u2014 completions of more than 15 yards and rushes of more than 11 yards \u2014 on 13.1 percent of their offensive plays, the highest mark in the league, according to TruMedia.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, that rate dropped to 10.4 percent, which ranked 16th. This season, the Chiefs are creating explosives on 9 percent of their offensive plays, which ranks 29th.<\/p>\n<p>And yet the Chiefs still rank fourth in offensive success rate, according to TruMedia. They are not the same explosive offense. They are still a good offense. Just smaller bites to finish the meal.<\/p>\n<p>The Chiefs achieve this by being excellent on third down. They are the only team in the league converting third downs more than 50 percent of the time. They are at a 64.4 percent conversion rate on third downs with 7 or fewer yards to gain, also the best mark in the league, according to TruMedia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can win games just about every which way,\u201d Minter said. \u201cThey can get in the shootout and hit the explosives, and they\u2019ve got the skill guys to do that. They can be in the grind-it-out (games). They\u2019ve got a really good defense, too. They trust Patrick to move the sticks. And so I think what makes them challenging is that even when they are methodical, they\u2019re still so good on third down that they just move the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The starting point for the Chargers will be stopping the run. Running back <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"QKtau6d3Xq0Ju5fo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/isiah-pacheco-QKtau6d3Xq0Ju5fo\/\">Isiah Pacheco<\/a> returned off injured reserve in last week\u2019s win over the Raiders. He had seven carries for 44 yards in his first game since Sept. 15. He should see an increased workload now that he has a game under his belt. The Chiefs are eighth in EPA per designed rush even though they were missing Pacheco for most of the season.<\/p>\n<p>If the Chargers can slow down the running game, they can get into some longer third downs. And they could potentially have an advantage on the edge. The Chiefs benched their left tackle, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"WiLzGIICetr3RY8y\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/wanya-morris-WiLzGIICetr3RY8y\/\">Wanya Morris<\/a>, against the Raiders. They signed <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"T8SXtKWLwAG4C5uW\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/dj-humphries-T8SXtKWLwAG4C5uW\/\">D.J. Humphries<\/a> last week, and Humphries is in line to start in place of Morris on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>Left tackle has been a major issue for the Chiefs all season. Of their 17 sacks allowed, nine have come from left tackle between Morris and rookie <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"3jn2A4CILULqrnnA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/kingsley-suamataia-3jn2A4CILULqrnnA\/\">Kingsley Suamataia<\/a>, according to TruMedia.
