Well, it did\u2014until about 95 percent of the mass sunk under the ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">While the majority of Zealandia may never host inhabitants\u2014at least, not land-based ones\u2014the would-be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a24851843\/continents-under-antarctic-ice\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:continent;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">continent<\/a> is now no longer simply lost. Researchers have finished mapping out the northern two-thirds of Zealandia, wrapping up the documentation of the nearly two million square miles of the submerged land mass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">In a study <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2023TC007961\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:published;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">published<\/a> in <em>Tectonics<\/em>, researchers from GNS Science of New Zealand document their process of dredging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/moon-mars\/news\/a27439\/surface-water-trapped-rocks-moon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:rock;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">rock<\/a> samples from the Fairway Ridge to the Coral Sea in order to analyze the rock geochemical and understand the underwater makeup of Zealandia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Zealandia\u2019s history is quite closely tied to the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, which broke up hundreds of millions of years ago. Zealandia followed suit\u2014roughly 80 million years ago, according to the latest theory. But unlike neighboring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a14768968\/australia-fence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Australia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Australia<\/a> or much of Antarctica, Zealandia largely sunk, leaving only a small portion of what many geologists believe should still be dubbed the eighth continent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a23891\/new-zealand-cows-rescued\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:New Zealand;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">New Zealand<\/a> makes up the most recognizable above-water portion of Zealandia, although a few other islands in the vicinity are also part of the maybe-continent in question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">This research, led by Nick Mortimer, dredged the northern two-thirds of the submerged area, pulling up pebbly and cobbley sandstone, fine-grain sandstone, mudstone, bioclastic limestone, and basaltic lava from a variety of time periods. By dating the rocks and interpreting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a44843071\/scientists-trapped-light-inside-metamaterial-magnetic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:magnetic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">magnetic<\/a> anomalies, the researchers wrote, they were able to map the major geological units across North Zealandia. \u201cThis work completes offshore reconnaissance geological mapping of the entire Zealandia continent,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The researchers found the sandstone roughly 95 million years old from the Late Cretaceous period and a mix of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/moon-mars\/a44497014\/scientists-found-strange-radioactive-granite-on-the-moon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:granite;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">granite<\/a> and volcanic pebbles from up to 130 million years old during the Early Cretaceous period. The basalts are newer\u2014they\u2019re about 40 million years old and from the Eocene period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Along with the mapping, the paper says that the internal deformation of both Zealandia and West Antarctica show that stretching led to the subduction-style cracking of the plates that welcomed ocean water to form the Tasman Sea. Then, a few million years later, further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/solar-system\/a14572143\/europa-icefin-aliens-antarctica\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Antarctica;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Antarctica<\/a> break-away continued to stretch the crust of Zealandia until it thinned enough to break apart and seal the largely underwater fate of Zealandia.
