When <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Variety<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced their annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/biz\/news\/ariana-grande-selena-gomez-ryan-reynolds-actors-on-actors-lineup-1236235757\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actors on Actors interview pairings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yesterday, some commentators were disappointed to see the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool &amp; Wolverine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">star sitting across from two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield. \u201cAndrew Garfield talking about playing a husband and father who\u2019s [sic] wife decides to forgo cancer treatment (in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Live In Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Ryan Reynolds talking about playing Deadpool,\u201d one Twitter (X) user wrote in a since-deleted post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reynolds is seemingly not pleased with that comparison\u2014not because his character, Wade Wilson, actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have cancer, and not because he leads the highest-grossing live-action film of the year, a genuinely impressive feat regardless of awards attention. No, it\u2019s because there\u2019s no reason for performances in cameo comedies like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool &amp; Wolverine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to be in conversation with elegiac dramas like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Live In Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, apparently. He doesn\u2019t intend that as any shade to Garfield, who he called a \u201cgenius\u201d in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VancityReynolds\/status\/1865059903712141701\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lengthy response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the aforementioned tweet. And yes, he knows he\u2019s Deadpool, \u201cBUT I will take a second and speak up in defense of comedy,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- admarker --> <!-- inlinecontent_1 --> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what he had to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dramatic work is difficult. And we\u2019re also meant to SEE it\u2019s difficult which is one of the reasons it feels visceral and effective. Comedy is also very difficult. But has an added dimension in that it\u2019s meant to look and feel effortless. You intentionally hide the stitching and unstitching. I think both disciplines are beautiful. And both work beautifully together. Comedy and drama subsist on tension. Both thrive when subverting expectation. Both thrive backstopped by real emotion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- inlinecontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<div class=\"grid-x articles-inline-insert\" id=\"inline-related-articles\">\n<ul class=\"articles grid-margin-x flex-container flex-dir-column\">\n<li class=\"grid-x grid-padding-x\"><a class=\"auto cell copy-container noimage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/ryan-reynolds-not-hosting-oscars\"><b class=\"title\">Ryan Reynolds is too busy and too anxious to host the Oscars this year<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"grid-x grid-padding-x\"><a class=\"auto cell copy-container noimage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/ryan-reynolds-stunt-work-oscar\"><b class=\"title\">Ryan Reynolds joins the chorus calling for a stunt work Oscar<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<p><!-- admarker --> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having seen the film, this writer would argue that Garfield\u2019s performance in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Live In Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is so effective precisely because it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feel difficult at all. The \u201cstitches\u201d in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool &amp; Wolverine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are so visible, on the other hand, that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/deadpool-and-wolverine-review\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The A.V. Club <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewer Jesse Hassenger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> devoted an entire paragraph to the broken canon in his writeup of the film. (His conclusion? Please direct your questions to Kevin Feige, because we don\u2019t get it either.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all of this is \u201cdeeply subjective\u201d according to Reynolds\u2019 post, which he concluded in a pretty baffling dichotomy: \u201cYour favourite comedy might be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anchorman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mine might be Lars Von Trier\u2019s, [sic] <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melancholia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Maybe that\u2019s a joke. If it\u2019s actually true, it would be a wild takeaway. As goofy as that thought is, however, it\u2019s not as noteworthy as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ozdustgal\/status\/1864708444688613546\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underlying reason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people were so upset about the lineup.
