Because Valve may have a <em>lot<\/em> of SteamOS hardware on the way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">If there\u2019s fire where we currently see smoke, Valve is currently preparing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/6\/17\/23172293\/valve-deckard-vr-headset-rumor-patent-images-leak\">wireless VR headset codename Deckard<\/a>, a pair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/2024\/11\/19\/24300757\/valve-steam-controller-2-roy-deckard-leak\">of trackable wands codename Roy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/2024\/11\/19\/24300757\/valve-steam-controller-2-roy-deckard-leak\">a Steam Controller 2 gamepad codename Ibex<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/5\/24314279\/what-could-valve-possibly-be-cooking-with-amd-chromeos-and-hdmi-cec\">codename Fremont living room console<\/a> too. And Valve has also now seemingly revealed plans for partners to create third-party SteamOS hardware too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It won\u2019t be easy to take on Sony, Microsoft, or Meta. Those companies have a lot to lose, and they\u2019re deeply entrenched. But the Steam Deck has revealed a massive weakness in each of their businesses that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/11\/25\/24305337\/sony-handheld-gaming-console-playstation-nintendo-microsoft\">may take<\/a> them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/11\/13\/24295461\/dont-expect-an-xbox-handheld-any-time-soon\">years to correct<\/a> \u2014 the desire to play a huge library of games anytime, anywhere. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And while they figure <em>that<\/em> out, Valve may be building an entire new ecosystem of SteamOS hardware, one that could finally let PC and peripheral makers tap into the huge and growing library of Windows games on all sorts of different hardware without relying on Microsoft or subjecting their customers to the many annoyances of Windows.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Today, every major PC company is building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22579493\/valve-steam-deck-gaming-handheld-pc\">one or more Steam Deck rivals<\/a>. But without Valve\u2019s blessing and support, they\u2019re saddled with a Windows OS that doesn\u2019t start, pause, and resume games quickly and seamlessly enough to feel portable and easy. When building those handhelds, they typically rely on off-the-shelf AMD chips, too, since no other manufacturer\u2019s parts currently compete on Windows gaming plus battery. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But Valve has long said it will open up SteamOS to other manufacturers, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/8\/13\/24219469\/valve-steamos-asus-rog-ally-steady-progress-dual-boot\">recently committing to some direct support for rival handhelds<\/a> like the Asus ROG Ally \u2014 and the other week, Valve quietly updated <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com\/steamcommunity\/public\/images\/steamworks_docs\/english\/steam_brandGuidelines.pdf\">a document<\/a> that may reveal its larger overarching strategy. Datamining by Brad Lynch, the Valve watcher whose community has uncovered most if not all of these leaks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/20\/24250135\/is-valve-cooking-up-an-arm-powered-vr-headset\">showed that Valve has been testing many Steam games<\/a>, including VR games, on Arm chips as well. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">While Valve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/8\/6\/22612886\/valve-steam-deck-handheld-gaming-pc-hands-on-preview?ref=uploadvr.com#:~:text=the%20Steam%20Deck%E2%80%99s%20custom%20APU%20in%20a%20standalone%20VR%20headset\">once told me<\/a> that the Steam Deck\u2019s AMD x86 chip might be a good candidate for a possible future standalone VR headset, Arm chips could potentially offer better battery life and lower weight for a portable product than x86 \u2014 even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/5\/24314279\/what-could-valve-possibly-be-cooking-with-amd-chromeos-and-hdmi-cec\">while Valve investigates more powerful AMD solutions than ever<\/a> for a possible living room console.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">When Valve asked PC manufacturers to sign onto its Steam Machines initiative over a decade ago, with the idea of building living room PC consoles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/7\/18\/22579747\/valve-steam-deck-steam-machines-editorial\">it asked for a leap of faith with very little to show and a tiny chance of success<\/a>. It took years for Valve to even build the oddball living room controller for its Steam Machines, and it didn\u2019t get far in convincing Windows game developers to port their games to Linux. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But by the time it announced the Steam Deck, Valve had hammered out a Proton software compatibility layer so good that many Windows games now run <em>better<\/em> on Linux, and created the most customizable yet familiar set of controls ever made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">If manufacturers could build their own Steam Machines rather than equivalent Windows machines, they could offer better gaming products than they do today. Maybe they\u2019d even want to release a VR headset that isn\u2019t tied to Microsoft or Meta if it doubled as a Steam Deck, portably playing decades of flatscreen games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It\u2019s not clear any of this will pan out; Valve is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/13\/24197477\/valve-employs-few-hundred-people-payroll-redacted\">an exceedingly small company<\/a> that tries not to chase too many things at a time.
