(For comparison: The moon orbits Earth at an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20the%20moon%20is,to%20about%2030%20Earth%20diameters.\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20the%20moon%20is,to%20about%2030%20Earth%20diameters.\"><u>average distance<\/u><\/a> of about 238,900 miles, or 384,500 km).<\/p>\n<p>However, if you&#8217;re in the Northern Hemisphere, the viewing conditions won&#8217;t be great: The asteroid will make its closest approach while traversing the southern sky between two <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15722-constellations.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15722-constellations.html\"><u>constellations<\/u><\/a>, the Dolphinfish and Reticulum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\"><strong>What are asteroids?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2024 XS2, discovered in March of this year, belongs to the Apollo class of asteroids, the most numerous group of near-Earth space rocks, which approach <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\"><u>the sun<\/u><\/a> closer than Earth does, crossing its orbit along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s close approach takes place only three days after a 28-inch-wide (70 centimeters) space rock exploded into a spectacular <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/asteroids\/spectacular-asteroid-blazes-over-siberia-just-hours-after-it-was-detected\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/asteroids\/spectacular-asteroid-blazes-over-siberia-just-hours-after-it-was-detected\"><u>fireball above Siberia<\/u><\/a>. Multiple photographers in the city of Oleminsk, near which pieces of this space rock are believed to have landed, captured the event, which took place at 1:15 a.m. local time on Dec. 4 (11.15 am EST on Dec. 3).<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-idxEtpKLJunmSJmxYpQ7CE\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-idxEtpKLJunmSJmxYpQ7CE slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The impact of that asteroid, since named C0WEPC5, was the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/asteroids\/tiny-asteroid-detected-hours-before-hitting-earth-to-become-4th-imminent-impactor-of-2024\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/asteroids\/tiny-asteroid-detected-hours-before-hitting-earth-to-become-4th-imminent-impactor-of-2024\"><u>fourth in 2024<\/u><\/a> and 11th overall that had been successfully predicted and observed based on previous orbital calculations.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/massive-potentially-hazardous-asteroid-due-to-make-closest-ever-approach-to-earth-tonight-and-you-can-watch-it-live\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/massive-potentially-hazardous-asteroid-due-to-make-closest-ever-approach-to-earth-tonight-and-you-can-watch-it-live\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>A much larger space rock<\/u><\/a>, once thought a potential hazard to Earth, safely missed the planet only hours after C0WEPC5 slammed into us. That space rock, the more than 1,000-foot-wide (300 meters) 2020 XR, made its closest approach to the planet on Dec. 4 at 12:27 a.m. EST (0527 GMT), passing 1.37 million miles (2.2 million km) \u2014 about six Earth-moon distances \u2014 away from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers currently monitor about <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/stats\/totals.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/stats\/totals.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>34,000 near-Earth asteroids<\/u><\/a>, which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unoosa.org\/oosa\/sk\/ourwork\/topics\/neos\/index.html#:~:text=A%20near%2DEarth%20object%20is,kilometres%2C%20of%20the%20Earth's%20orbit.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.unoosa.org\/oosa\/sk\/ourwork\/topics\/neos\/index.html#:~:text=A%20near%2DEarth%20object%20is,kilometres%2C%20of%20the%20Earth's%20orbit.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>pass within 28 million miles (45 million km) of Earth&#8217;s orbit<\/u><\/a>. A near-Earth asteroid wider than 460 feet (140 m) that approaches closer than 4,650,000 miles (7,480,000 km) to Earth\u2019s orbit is deemed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/about\/neo_groups.html#:~:text=Specifically%2C%20all%20asteroids%20with%20an,or%20less%20are%20considered%20PHAs.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/about\/neo_groups.html#:~:text=Specifically%2C%20all%20asteroids%20with%20an,or%20less%20are%20considered%20PHAs.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>potentially hazardous<\/u><\/a>.
