But the opposition fighters were facing some of the stiffest resistance they have encountered so far from government forces there, who are trying to block the rapidly moving rebel advance heading toward Damascus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Syrian government forces are still stationed on the outskirts of Homs and were shelling areas newly captured by the rebels, according to a British-based war monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. There were also clashes between rebels and government forces north of the city, the Observatory said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rebels said they were advancing through the northern Homs countryside toward the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSyria is witnessing a historic change,\u201d the rebels said in a statement released on their official Telegram channel. \u201cAnd the people\u2019s message has become clear: There is no place for injustice, no return to tyranny, and the end is closer than Bashar imagines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The new uprisings present the most serious challenge in years to Mr. al-Assad\u2019s power.
