It was a brutal, unforgiving assault that left the US Pacific Fleet in ruins and the memory of that day seared into history as, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/afc1986022.afc1986022_ms2201\/?st=text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Franklin Roosevelt\u2019s words<\/a>, \u201ca date which will live in infamy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n00073b6mvuyupxbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kohler had disobeyed direct orders to shelter in a ditch and remain in place. Instead, he ran to retrieve ammunition. There was so much work to do that there was no time for hobbies besides hunting and helping put food on the table, he told CNN in an interview. But when he turned 17, he voluntarily enlisted into the Navy because he felt it was right for him to be there.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4ds7wy200073b6mryo16pp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI had learned early in life that you never run from a challenge or fight, you always run to it. You can\u2019t beat them by running from them,\u201d Kohler told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dqk3cu00053b6mt07nhcx8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf I am to be considered a representative of people of my generation as I\u2019ve tried to be for all those that were lost at Pearl Harbor, I hope I have done it in a way that will have made them proud and brought to them the well-deserved honor and continued remembrance that they so rightfully deserve.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n00083b6mtc5h3oao@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now 100 years old, the veteran is believed to be one of only 16 Pearl Harbor survivors who are still alive, Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, confirmed to CNN. Of those killed, 1,177 served on the <a href=\"https:\/\/visitpearlharbor.org\/faqs\/how-many-people-died-at-pearl-harbor-during-the-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USS Arizona<\/a>. Lou Conter, the last known survivor of the attack on the ship, died in April.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n000b3b6m1cr8zfvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Saturday, thousands will gather on the shores of Pearl Harbor for the 83rd anniversary of the bombing. They will honor members of the Greatest Generation, a tribute to Americans who lived through the Great Depression and then fought in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/07\/09\/world\/world-war-ii-fast-facts\/\">WWII<\/a>, \u201cfor their sacrifice, courage, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pearlharborevents.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indomitable perseverance<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n00093b6m7leamhsz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an email this week, Farley pointed to her <a href=\"https:\/\/sdphs.org\/about\/purpose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organization<\/a>\u2019s motto: \u201cLest We Forget.\u201d \u201cWe have not forgotten the 87,000 active military who were on the island of Oahu on December 7, 1941,\u201d said Farley, daughter of John Farley, who survived the attack while aboard the USS California.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4de4l0400013b6mpwgawux2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSeveral events are planned to honor our beloved Pearl Harbor survivors, our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers who were there, and we know their stories,\u201d Farley said. \u201cMay those who have gone before us, fair winds and following seas. We, the Sons and Daughters, will carry on with your history with pride.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4de6krv00043b6mwif4eeip@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"survivors-attend-anniversary-events-in-hawaii-and-california\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        Survivors attend anniversary events in Hawaii and California<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n000c3b6ms6od3fxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At least two survivors \u2013 Ken Stevens and Ira \u201cIke\u201d Schab Jr. \u2013 are expected to attend the Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony in Oahu, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/423749560674843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacific Historic Parks,<\/a> which manages the USS Arizona Memorial.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n000d3b6mh4jyxixj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schab, 104, was greeted by the US Pacific Fleet Band and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Honor Guard upon his arrival at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Tuesday, according to a post published by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DDNsIW9t4Cb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam<\/a>. His family had raised more than $5,000 to help him travel to attend the Pearl Harbor Commemorations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n000e3b6mnkm5bizb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Initially, Schab did not want to return to the island because of how painful the memory was, his family told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2024\/12\/04\/104-respected-pearl-harbor-veteran-returns-hawaii-somber-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now<\/a>. He was waiting for his younger brother Allen, who was visiting, so they could explore Honolulu together.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dfecrs001y3b6m3qatbzcq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But they never got to meet up that morning \u2013 and when the attacks began, Schab immediately started feeding ammunition to the gunners. More than anything else that day, Schab remembers \u201cbeing scared,\u201d he told Hawaii News Now. \u201cWondering about my brothers. Where they were.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dedy68000p3b6mcbw1fcir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The attack occurred around 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-07\/pearl-harbor.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carried out by<\/a> 353 Japanese planes, 35 submarines and two battleships. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/history\/pdf\/pearl-harbor-fact-sheet-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">160 aircraft<\/a> were destroyed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n000i3b6m2rmnb4to@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The air was thick with smoke and the acrid scent of burning oil and metal. Ships, once proud and sturdy, were ripped apart by torpedoes and bombs, sending massive plumes of fire and debris into the air. The US battleships, anchored in the harbor, were struck with such force that their hulls buckled and split open, flames engulfing the decks in a blinding inferno.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n000j3b6m1hvc5nl0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bodies of sailors, soldiers and airmen were thrown into the water, some burned beyond recognition, others left floating in the oily sea. He grabbed a 50-caliber machine gun and ammunition and helped shoot at attacking warplanes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4ds2sjc00003b6myto1jub1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat affected me the most was seeing those ships explode, capsize, and knowing that with every one of those events there were a lot of lives being lost,\u201d Kohler said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4dduj1n000n3b6mzfb2896e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kohler is not in Hawaii. Instead, he will be speaking at the annual Beacon lighting ceremony<strong> <\/strong>held by conservation nonprofit Save Mount Diablo in California to pay tribute to the lives that were lost and honor surviving veterans. The Beacon on Mount Diablo was installed and illuminated in 1928 to aid in transcontinental aviation.
