ESPN reported Friday that OSU and Gundy <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeteThamel\/status\/1865118333755867149\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:were in a &quot;standoff&quot;;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">were in a &#8220;standoff&#8221;<\/a> over a redone deal following a board of regents meeting that morning.<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma State went 3-9 in 2024. It was the worst season of Gundy\u2019s 20-year tenure. <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/college\/cowboys\/2024\/12\/06\/oklahoma-state-football-regents-meeting-mike-gundy-osu-cowboys-coaching-staff\/76820489007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:After the board meeting on Friday;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">After the board meeting on Friday<\/a>, chair Jimmy Harrel said \u201cwe have a plan.\u201d The board was in executive session for &#8220;information relevant to the employment of Oklahoma State University football staff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/ncaa\/salaries\/football\/coach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Per USA Today\u2019s salary database,;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Per USA Today\u2019s salary database,<\/a> Gundy is the 17th-highest paid coach in college football on an annual basis with a total compensation of over $7.7 million. His buyout is just over $25.3 million as the former Oklahoma State quarterback has been on a rolling five-year deal.<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma State recently fired both its offensive and defensive coordinators after the dismal season. Oklahoma State\u2019s offense was plagued by turnovers and the defense allowed nearly seven yards a play and 36 points per game.<\/p>\n<p>The porous season came just a year after the Cowboys played Texas for the Big 12 title and went 10-4. Oklahoma State opened the season as a favorite in the Big 12 but went 0-9 in Big 12 play. RB Ollie Gordon rushed for over 850 yards fewer in 2024 than he did in 2023, when he finished seventh in the Heisman voting.<\/p>\n<p>Gundy also didn&#8217;t do himself any favors when he had to apologize &#8220;to those who my comments during Monday\u2019s media call offended&#8221; <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/oklahoma-state-coach-mike-gundy-apologizes-after-saying-most-people-are-weak-when-talking-about-fan-criticism-182338734.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:for November comments about fan criticism.;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">for November comments about fan criticism.<\/a> As OSU was 0-6 in the Big 12, Gundy said that &#8220;most people are weak&#8221; when things aren&#8217;t going well and even went as far as to say &#8220;in most cases, the people who are negative and voicing their opinion are the same ones that can\u2019t pay their own bills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma State had gone to 18 straight bowl games under Gundy in a streak that dated back to his second season.
