We need to know much more about this case, including some hypotheses for how she or he may have contracted the virus,\u201d said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University in Providence, R.I. \u201cGiven the proximity of this case to the last case of H5N1 diagnosed in a child without known exposure to animals, it may be prudent to conduct a broader investigation, including a serologic study, to see if there is evidence of other infections in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, state health officials <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-11-19\/alameda-county-child-believed-to-be-latest-case-of-bird-flu-source-unknown\">announced a child in Alameda County was positive for the disease<\/a>. Investigators have not been able to determine the source of exposure. The child suffered from mild respiratory symptoms, and no one else in the child\u2019s family or day care was infected.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the state nor county public health officials have responded to queries from The Times, and no further information was provided in the newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>If confirmed, this would be 61st human case of bird flu this year. Two cases were announced in Arizona on Friday \u2014 both cases involving dairy workers.<\/p>\n<p>This would also be the third case in the U.S. this year where the source of exposure is unknown. Aside from the case of the child in Alameda County, a person in Missouri was also infected by an unknown source.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the U.S., <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-11-13\/teenager-infected-with-h5n1-bird-flu-in-critical-condition\">a teenager in Canada was also infected<\/a> by the virus \u2014 source unknown \u2014 and has remained in critical condition for three weeks with severe disease.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the human cases in the United States have involved dairy workers and poultry workers \u2014 exposed in places where the virus is known to present.<\/p>\n<p>To date, most cases of H5N1 bird flu in people have been mild, involving conjunctivitis, or pink eye, and mild upper respiratory symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators will need to evaluate the genetic sequencing of the virus to determine if the virus is of dairy or bird origin. <\/p>\n<p>Wastewater samples collected <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/data.wastewaterscan.org\/tracker?charts=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&amp;selectedChartId=7e25a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by WastewaterScan <\/a>\u2014 an infectious disease monitoring network led by researchers at Stanford and Emory universities, with lab testing partner Verily, Alphabet Inc.\u2019s life sciences organization \u2014 has shown the virus is widely present in the environment, including Marin County sites in San Raphael and Novato.<\/p>\n<p>In the last two weeks, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-12-04\/raw-farm-fresno-bird-flu-all-milk-cream-recalled\">state health and agriculture officials suspended<\/a> and recalled infected raw milk that had made its way to grocery store shelves throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>There have been no known outbreaks associated with that raw milk, and it is unclear if people can get the disease by consuming it in milk.<\/p>\n<p>However, several mammal species have displayed severe illness and death after consuming raw milk including cats and mice.<\/p>\n<p>Mark McAfee, the owner of the infected raw milk farm \u2014 Raw Farm LLC \u2014 told The Times last week that he believed the milk had gone out to 90,000 customers.<\/p>\n<p>Asked how he determined that number, he said, \u201cOur consumers buy every week&#8230;. it\u2019s very reliable.
