A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchicagomedicine.org\/forefront\/cancer-articles\/why-are-more-young-people-getting-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study found<\/a> that the number of cases in adults under 50 is rising by 1 to 2% annually.<\/p>\n<p>An analysis of global health data predicts that early onset cancer will jump by 30% between 2019 and 2030, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchicagomedicine.org\/forefront\/cancer-articles\/why-are-more-young-people-getting-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UChicago Medicine reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say that there is no one reason for this rise, instead it\u2019s likely related to various factors including lifestyle and environment.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, most recommended screenings that would detect early signs of cancer have a minimum recommended age. So, while young people are becoming more prone to these conditions, there is less protection in place to catch cancer in its earlier, more treatable stages,\u00a0UChicago Medicine reported.<\/p>\n<p>While these screenings are essential for detection that could lead to treatment, a nurse on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/tags\/tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok<\/a> is trying to dissuade people from getting them by spreading claims that are not scientifically backed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nurse-spreads-cancer-screening-misinformation\">Nurse spreads cancer screening misinformation<\/h2>\n<p>In a viral video with more than 360,000 views, nurse Michele (@truthrn_michele) said that she wouldn\u2019t get a mammogram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just what I\u2019m doing. You have to do your own research,\u201d she flagged before delving in.<\/p>\n<p>Michele said that when she was in nursing school, she learned that you shouldn\u2019t deeply palpate (feel or examine for medical purposes) a mass.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-myth-about-cancer-screenings\">Myth about cancer screenings<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Myth:<\/strong> She alleged that if there were an infected cyst and it burst you\u2019d risk spreading infection. If it\u2019s a cancerous mass, it could rupture, spread into the bloodstream, and metastasize.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, she claims the radiation could be an issue because breast tissue is sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just doesn\u2019t make sense to me and I don\u2019t have to show anybody peer reviewed studies. You\u2019re gonna have to, like I said, do your own research. That\u2019s not why I\u2019m here,\u201d Michele said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m gonna provoke thought, and I\u2019m gonna encourage you to educate yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that she\u2019s against screenings and treatments and will instead \u201ccontinue to live as toxic-free a lifestyle as I possibly can.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-facts\">What are the facts?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> The compression from a mammogram cannot cause cancer to spread, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbreastcancer.org\/breast-cancer-myths\/a-mammogram-can-cause-breast-cancer-to-spread\/#:~:text=Neither%20the%20compression%20of%20the%20breast%20required,screening%20for%20women%20beginning%20at%20age%2040.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Breast Cancer Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/charlotteradiology.com\/blog\/8-common-breast-cancer-myths-debunked\/#:~:text=Myth%3A%20Mammograms%20Can%20Cause%20Cancer%20to%20Form%20or%20Spread&amp;text=The%20proven%20outcomes%20of%20annual,Chudgar%20says.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charlotte Radiology<\/a>. Breast tissue is compressed to reduce the breast thickness to allow for a high-quality X-ray. Neither the compression nor the small amount of radiation used cause cancer or spread it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe benefits of early detection of breast cancer through mammography far outweigh any potential risks,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/types\/breast\/mammograms-fact-sheet#what-are-the-benefits-and-potential-harms-of-screening-mammograms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Cancer Institute states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rare risk: <\/strong>If you\u2019re getting something like a biopsy, where tissue or cells are removed for examination, there is technically a risk of spread, but it\u2019s \u201cextremely rare,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/latest-news\/can-getting-a-biopsy-make-cancer-spread.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Cancer Society<\/a>. For more information on this, they provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/latest-news\/can-getting-a-biopsy-make-cancer-spread.html#:~:text=Several%20studies%20have,or%20overall%20survival.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four studies from 2008 to 2024<\/a> with specific data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a nurse, I believe you\u2019re giving people dangerous information,\u201d a top comment read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICU nurse here\u2026.. Won\u2019t ever have mammograms or colonoscopy!\u201d another said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a mammography tech. I left the field years ago because I questioned it daily and had concerns.
