According to the scientists involved, this breakthrough could transform the fields of cellular and tissue engineering.

Hybrid Cells

It’s important to understand that animal and plant cells naturally produce energy in different ways. Animal cells use organelles known as mitochondria to convert chemical energy from food into a form the body can use. On the other hand, plant and algal cells utilize chloroplasts (a type of organelle that contains chlorophyll) to perform photosynthesis, thereby creating energy directly from sunlight.

A team from the University of Tokyo in Japan has recently introduced cells of a novel type. Their study, published in the Proceedings of the Japan Academy on October 1, 2024, describes an unprecedented process. The researchers inserted chloroplasts into animal cells and observed that these organelles continued to function for a brief period, about two days. These chloroplasts were taken from red algae, and the animal cells were derived from hamsters.

This experiment extends previous work involving the transplantation of chloroplasts into yeasts (fungi). However, moving from yeast to animal cells marks a significant step, especially since it was uncertain whether these cells could harness solar energy to produce power.

The Key Element: Chlorophyll

The scientists demonstrated that the plant cell organelles had accomplished their task by detecting the presence of chlorophyll, a compound typically absent in animal cells. Additionally, a second method was used to confirm the finding. The researchers verified the presence of chlorophyll using a specific laser targeted at the modified cells. This component is fluorescent when exposed to a certain wavelength. Furthermore, it appears that the animal cells with chloroplasts developed more quickly than others, likely due to the presence of these organelles. “To our knowledge, this is the first reported detection of photosynthetic electron transport in chloroplasts implanted in animal cells,” stated the authors.

For the Japanese researchers, these findings could prove beneficial in several areas, such as cellular and tissue engineering. Chloroplasts might promote cell division, thus enhancing tissue growth. This could potentially boost the production of lab-grown meat and, most importantly, the cultivation of organs for transplantation.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-layout-key="-fb+5w+4e-db+86"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3711241968723425"
     data-ad-slot="7910942971"></ins>

Source link

In Japan, researchers have conducted an experiment as bizarre as it is fascinating, creating hybrid cells that are part hamster and part plant.
