But some drivers will still need an emissions test.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 We\u2019ve been reminding you for months that starting on January 1, drivers of non-commercial vehicles in Texas won\u2019t need their annual inspections <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/news\/local\/texas\/texas-state-vehicle-inspections-january-1-2025\/285-67c94ce2-e053-42e7-affc-39992f1420ad\">to get their vehicle registration<\/a>. Now the Texas Department of Transportation has launched a public service announcement to make sure you know how it works.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>House Bill 3297 was passed in the 2023 legislative session and is now days away from going into effect.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Under the new law, drivers in Texas\u2019 more populated counties \u2013 including some in the Houston area \u2013 will still need to pass an emissions test to get their vehicles registered. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Drivers will also need to pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee. That\u2019ll be paid when you get your registration.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Here are the PSAs that the Texas DPS dropped on Friday in both English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2>English version<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_embed\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vehicle Safety Inspection Changes Public Service Announcement\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FuMeUzbzjk4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2>Spanish version<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_embed\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anuncio de servicio p\u00fablico sobre cambios en la inspecci\u00f3n de seguridad de veh\u00edculos.\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/npedppVO4to?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><strong><em>One thing to remember &#8212; because the current state law requires a vehicle to pass inspection before registration renewal, any\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/news\/local\/texas\/texas-vehicle-inspection-law-change\/285-fe7efbda-5ff6-4757-896f-2d618097b890\"><strong><em>renewal attempt before January 1<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>\u00a0will not go through until that date.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The emissions test will be required for drivers of non-commercial vehicles in Harris, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Montgomery counties in the Houston area. Drivers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall and Tarrant counties will also need emissions test. And in the Austin area, drivers of non-commercial vehicles in Travis and Williamson counties will still need to pass the test. Same goes for drivers in El Paso County. For drivers in San Antonio, the emissions test isn\u2019t required when the new law goes into effect in 2025, but drivers in Bexar County will need them beginning in 2026.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"isPasted\">Your questions<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>When we originally posted this story in August, we heard from many of you who had questions about the new law.
