In both, his face is partially obscured by a blue, medical-style mask.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Retracing the gunman\u2019s steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting Wednesday morning outside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/new-york\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">New York<\/a> Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later, said the New York police\u2019s chief of detectives, Joseph Kenny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">With the high-profile search expanding across state lines, the FBI announced late Friday that it was offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/dec\/07\/fbi-reward-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a $50,000 reward<\/a> for information leading to an arrest and conviction, adding to a reward of up to $10,000 that the NYPD has offered. But they are confident it was a targeted attack instead of a random act. And New York City\u2019s mayor, Eric Adams, insisted Saturday that \u201cthe net is tightening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Aided by drones, police officers scouring Central Park found a backpack believed to have been discarded by Thompson\u2019s killer during his escape. NBC News, citing two sources, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting-brian-thompson-suspect-what-know-rcna183155\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reported<\/a> that there was fake money from the board game Monopoly inside the backpack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In addition to the apparent targeted nature of the attack, the words \u201cdelay\u201d, \u201cdeny\u201d and possibly depose were written on shell casings found in the wake of Thompson\u2019s killing. Such evidence has suggested the possibility that the motive is linked to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/dec\/07\/brian-thompson-killing-healthcare-industry\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">healthcare industry\u2019s routine denial of payments<\/a> for medical services to many Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Healthcare debt has emerged as the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US while for-profit health insurers such as UnitedHealthcare among the country\u2019s wealthiest entities. Thompson, 50, who lived in Minnesota near UnitedHealthcare\u2019s headquarters, commanded a salary of $10m annually before he was shot dead as he prepared to attend a meeting with investors of the
