Avalanche Center<\/a> described the avalanche as a &#8220;small, thin wind slab.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/avalanche.org\/avalanche-encyclopedia\/#wind-slab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">avalanche.org<\/a>, a wind slab is &#8220;the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-you-should-know-about-blowing-drifting-snow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drifted snow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a snow down a mountain, hill or any steep incline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Avalanches can be sudden, but there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/avalanche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warning signs you can look out for<\/a> when you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/outdoors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outdoors<\/a> to help you stay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the National Weather Service, avalanches generally occur on slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Recent avalanches, shooting cracks and &#8220;whumping&#8221; sounds are signs of an unstable snowpack.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">And sometimes it doesn&#8217;t take much to trigger an avalanche, such as the snowboarder in the video at the top of this story.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-video video-ct\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"info\">\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p class=\"sub-text\">A group of skiers in the French Alps caught video of an avalanche speeding down a mountainside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Before venturing out, determine if you are on or below slopes where avalanches can occur and whether the snow in the area is stable.
