{"id":134990,"date":"2024-12-09T06:46:55","date_gmt":"2024-12-08T23:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=134990"},"modified":"2024-12-09T06:46:55","modified_gmt":"2024-12-08T23:46:55","slug":"trump-says-he-cant-guarantee-tariffs-wont-raise-us-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=134990","title":{"rendered":"Trump says he can&#8217;t guarantee tariffs won&#8217;t raise US prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a><\/span> said he can\u2019t guarantee that his <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-prices-inflation-mexico-canada-d44aa0715a649998195fc3211e9ab7a3\">promised tariffs<\/a><\/span> on key U.S. foreign trade partners won\u2019t <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-china-mexico-canada-fentanyl-inflation-cf905e75e863511baef959a80ee2eea2\">raise prices<\/a><\/span> for American consumers and he suggested once more that some <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-harris-wisconsin-election-economy-a6923d6c5758dabb6d959417ea9d7d12\">political rivals and federal officials<\/a><\/span> who pursued legal cases against him should be imprisoned. <\/p>\n<p>The president-elect, in a wide-ranging interview with NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d that aired Sunday, also touched on monetary policy, immigration, abortion and health care, and U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Trump often mixed declarative statements with caveats, at one point cautioning \u201cthings do change.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A look at some of the issues covered:<\/p>\n<h2>Trump hems on whether trade penalties could raise prices <\/h2>\n<p>Trump has threatened broad trade penalties, but said he didn\u2019t believe <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-prices-inflation-mexico-canada-d44aa0715a649998195fc3211e9ab7a3\">economists\u2019 predictions<\/a><\/span> that added costs on those imported goods for American companies would lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers. He stopped short of a pledge that U.S. households won\u2019t be paying more as they shop. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t guarantee anything. I can\u2019t guarantee tomorrow,\u201d Trump said, seeming to open the door to accepting the reality of how import levies typically work as goods reach the retail market. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a different approach from Trump\u2019s typical speeches throughout the 2024 campaign, when he framed his election as a sure way to curb inflation. <\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Trump defended tariffs generally, saying they are \u201cgoing to make us rich.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He has pledged that, on his first day in office in January, he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada unless those countries satisfactorily stop illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. He also has threatened additional tariffs on China to help force that country to crack down on fentanyl production. <\/p>\n<p>\u201dAll I want to do is I want to have a level, fast, but fair playing field,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n<h2>Trump suggests retribution for his opponents while claiming no interest in vengeance<\/h2>\n<h2\/>\n<p>He offered conflicting statements on how he would approach the justice system after winning election despite being convicted of 34 felonies in a New York state court and being indicted in other cases for his handling of national security secrets and efforts to overturn his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, they should go to jail,\u201d Trump said of members of Congress who investigated the Capitol riot by his supporters who wanted him to remain in power. <\/p>\n<p>The president-elect underscored his contention that he can use the justice system against others, including special prosecutor Jack Smith, who led the case on Trump\u2019s role in the siege on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump confirmed his plan to pardon supporters who were convicted for their roles in the riot, saying he would take that action on his first day in office. <\/p>\n<p>As for the idea of revenge driving potential prosecutions, Trump said: \u201cI have the absolute right. I\u2019m the chief law enforcement officer, you do know that. I\u2019m the president. But I\u2019m not interested in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Trump singled out lawmakers on a special House committee who had investigated the insurrection, citing Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheney was behind it &#8230; so was Bennie Thompson and everybody on that committee,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked specifically whether he would direct his administration to pursue cases, he said, \u201cNo,\u201d and suggested he did not expect the FBI to quickly undertake investigations into his political enemies. <\/p>\n<p>But at another point, Trump said he would leave the matter up to Pam Bondi, his pick as attorney general. \u201cI want her to do what she wants to do,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Such threats, regardless of Trump\u2019s inconsistencies, have been taken seriously enough by many top Democrats that Biden is considering issuing blanket, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-pardons-trump-f36ead0eb92ea30e47cbfddfaf326f20\">preemptive pardons<\/a><\/span> to protect key members of his outgoing administration. <\/p>\n<p>Trump did seemingly back off his campaign rhetoric calling for Biden to be investigated, saying, \u201cI\u2019m not looking to go back into the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Swift action on immigration is coming<\/h2>\n<h2\/>\n<p>Trump repeatedly mentioned his promises to seal the U.S.-Mexico border and deport millions of people who are in the U.S. illegally through a mass deportation program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you have to do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested he would try to use executive action to end \u201cbirthright\u201d citizenship under which people born in the U.S. are considered citizens \u2014 although such protections are spelled out in the Constitution. <\/p>\n<p>Asked specifically about the future for people who were brought into the country illegally as children and have been shielded from deportation in recent years, Trump said, \u201cI want to work something out,\u201d indicating he might seek a solution with Congress. <\/p>\n<p>But Trump also said he does not \u201cwant to be breaking up families\u201d of mixed legal status, \u201cso the only way you don\u2019t break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Trump commits to NATO, with conditions, and waffles on Putin and Ukraine<\/h2>\n<p>Long a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><span class=\"Link\">critic of NATO<\/span><\/span> members for not spending more on their own defense, Trump said he \u201cabsolutely\u201d would remain in the alliance \u201cif they pay their bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pressed on whether he would withdraw if he were dissatisfied with allies\u2019 commitments, Trump said he wants the U.S. treated \u201cfairly\u201d on trade and defense.<\/p>\n<p>He waffled on a NATO priority of containing Russia and President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Trump suggested Ukraine should prepare for less U.S. aid in its defense against Putin\u2019s invasion. \u201cPossibly. Yeah, probably. Sure,\u201d Trump said of reducing Ukraine assistance from Washington. Separately, Trump has <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-trump-ceasefire-e00a18db202ef74b38e009bb2a5381cf\">called for an immediate ceasefire<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Putin, Trump said initially that he has not talked to the Russian leader since Election Day last month, but then hedged: \u201cI haven\u2019t spoken to him recently.\u201d Trump said when pressed, adding that he did not want to \u201cimpede the negotiation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Trump says Powell is safe at the Fed, but not Wray at the FBI <\/h2>\n<p>The president-elect said he has no intention, at least for now, of asking Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to step down before Powell\u2019s term ends in 2028. Trump said during the campaign that presidents should have <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/federal-reserve-powell-trump-rates-independence-politics-ec0eac23ffc0181cbc9b7312d2ee438f\">more say in Fed policy<\/a><\/span>, including interest rates. <\/p>\n<p>Trump did not offer any job assurances for FBI Director Christopher Wray, whose term is to end in 2027. <\/p>\n<p>Asked about Wray, Trump said: \u201cWell, I mean, it would sort of seem pretty obvious\u201d that if the Senate confirms Kash Patel as his <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-trump-patel-fisa-russia-2d215ded96ad8a08689b6f7f0b2d49ec\">pick for FBI chief,<\/a><\/span> then \u201che\u2019s going to be taking somebody\u2019s place, right? Somebody is the man that you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Trump is absolute about Social Security, not so much on abortion and health insurance<\/h2>\n<p>Trump promised that the government efficiency effort led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will not threaten Social Security. \u201cWe\u2019re not touching Social Security, other than we make it more efficient,\u201d he said. He added that \u201cwe\u2019re not raising ages or any of that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was not so specific about abortion or his long-promised overhaul of the Affordable Care Act. <\/p>\n<p>On abortion, Trump continued <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-abortion-election-2024-ivf-contraception-d91f0959087e803db390be11eb60975b\">his inconsistencies<\/a><\/span> and said he would \u201cprobably\u201d not move to restrict access to the abortion pills that now account for a majority of pregnancy terminations, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights. But pressed on whether he would commit to that position, Trump replied, \u201cWell, I commit. I mean, are &#8212; things do &#8212; things change. I think they change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reprising a line from his <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/debate-president-trump-harris-takeaways-b648ff0b9baf10d4625548e815d7cfe3\">Sept. 10 debate<\/a><\/span> against Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump again said he had \u201cconcepts\u201d of a plan to substitute for the 2010 Affordable Care Act, which he called \u201clousy health care.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He added a promise that any Trump version would maintain insurance protections for Americans with preexisting health conditions.
