Markwayne Mullin hit back at CNN host J<a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/keyword\/jake-tapper\/')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/keyword\/jake-tapper\/\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/keyword\/jake-tapper\/\">ake Tapper <\/a>as he defended <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/hegseth-vows-to-stop-drinking-alcohol-if-confirmed\/')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/hegseth-vows-to-stop-drinking-alcohol-if-confirmed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/hegseth-vows-to-stop-drinking-alcohol-if-confirmed\/\">Pete Hegseth<\/a>\u2019s claim that he never had a drinking problem. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Appearing for an interview on the show <i>State of the Union <\/i>Sunday, Mullin said journalists had been \u201chypocritical\u201d by questioning Donald Trump\u2019s defense secretary pick for once admitting that he would use alcohol as self-medication while serving in the US Army.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cFor the media to go after him and start describing that as a drinking problem, it\u2019s individuals that don\u2019t understand combat veterans because they\u2019ve never been there,\u201d he told Tapper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019ve never been in combat. They\u2019ve never seen the horrific stuff that comes by that they\u2019ve never tasted the dirt in their mouth. They\u2019ve never heard the horrible sounds in their ears. They\u2019ve never had the sights that they can\u2019t get rid of. They\u2019ve never had the dreams in the middle of the night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s hypocritical for them to even question that,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Tapper opened his question by showing two clips with apparently contradicting claims from Hegseth, the former Army National Guard officer who is facing increased scrutiny as he vies for the job leading US national defense. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The first clip from a recent interview on the Megyn Kelly showed Hegseth claiming he did not suffer from alcoholism and \u201cnever sought counseling.\u201d The second clip showed Hegseth on the \u201cWill Cain Show\u201d podcast in 2021 saying he would turn to drinking in the mornings when he served in the army. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Oembed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"Oembed \" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" data-testid=\"oembed-container\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"Oembed__html\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) Defends Pete Hegseth, Criticizes Media Over Alcohol Allegations, and Reacts to Biden&#8217;s Pre-Emptive Pardons: &#8220;There\u2019s a lot of alcohol that flows through Washington, D.C., on a regular basis. How would I drink some beers? How would I go have lunch and have some beers? How would I meet my one or two buddies and have some beers? And one beers leads to many, leads to self medication, it leads to [a feeling that] \u2018I\u2019ve earned this\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mullin insisted these comments offered no proof that Hegseth had any problems. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cUnfortunately, a lot of our combat vets have come back and face the same thing. They\u2019re sitting there and they had their identity in the service. They had a job to do. They were responsible for certain things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey get out of the service in their back, and they\u2019re sitting there twiddle their tongues. They\u2019ve had a lot of experiences that the regular population doesn\u2019t. They have these memories, these thoughts, these sounds, the smells that are still coming back to them and they turn to drinking with their buddies. That doesn\u2019t mean that they had a drinking problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He then turned his ire to the media saying, journalists \u201cshould be ashamed of themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey should put themselves in their shoes and every other combat veteran\u2019s shoes,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Tapper rejected Mullin\u2019s fiery remarks, claiming he had always shown war veterans respect in his reporting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI have done a lot of coverage of veterans and a lot of coverage of combat, and while I\u2019ve never worn the uniform, I think I do have an understanding of the need of our valiant troops when they come home to self medicate. What I\u2019m saying is, when you\u2019re talking about drinking at 10 in the morning, that\u2019s a drinking problem,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But Mullin again suggested that it\u2019s others who need to look in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of politicians that have a drinking problem,\u201d Mullin responded. \u201cThere\u2019s probably a lot of media that has a drinking problem too. There\u2019s a lot of alcohol that flows through Washington, DC on a regular basis, and I wouldn\u2019t say that people are alcoholics or they have a drinking problem because of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Tapper, however, shot down his argument.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cA drunk reporter who\u2019s drinking at 10am, for whatever reason, is not in charge of the three-million-person Defense Department.
