Yet, before the first tree rooted itself in the soil, another form of life was already patrolling the planet\u2019s oceans: sharks.<\/p>\n<p>These apex predators have existed on Earth for over 400 million years, predating the emergence of trees by at least 50 million years. The ancestors of the modern sharks first appeared in this Silurian Period. Sharks\u2019 defining feature, their cartilaginous skeletons, was one of the key reasons they evolved so early, making them perfectly adapted to thrive in a watery world.<\/p>\n<p>See, unlike the rigid bony skeletons of many modern fish, cartilage is lightweight and flexible, and it gave sharks an edge in speed and maneuverability in the water. This gave it an advantage when it had to avoid larger predators.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cladoselache <\/em>was relatively small as well, reaching only about 6 feet in length. Its teeth, unlike those of modern sharks, were not replaceable. They were smooth and suited for grasping rather than tearing prey.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">The Trees Arrive Around 50 Million Years Later<\/h2>\n<p>While sharks expanded their dominion of the seas, the land was barren and inhospitable, with even small plants struggling to gain a foothold.<\/p>\n<p>Early plants like mosses and liverworts emerged around 470 million years ago during the Ordovician Period. Trees as we know them today, however, only appeared in the late Devonian Period, roughly 350 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The first trees, such as <em>Archaeopteris, <\/em>were different from modern varieties. These towering plants had a combination of ferns\u2019 spore-reproducing capabilities and woody trunks, representing a critical evolutionary link in the history of terrestrial life.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-1\" role=\"presentation\"><figcaption><fbs-accordion class=\"expandable\" current=\"-1\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">Archaeopteris is one of Earths earliest trees. Their resilience enabled them to survive numerous disasters, including the Permian-Triassic extinction which wiped out over 90% of Earth\u2019s species.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Shark History Is A Tale of Continuous Evolution<\/h2>\n<p>Sharks\u2019 survival has been aided by the continuous refinement of their evolutionary toolkit over millennia. Their teeth, for example, are a marvel of nature and have evolved from the relatively rudimentary sets their ancestors the <em>Cladoselache <\/em>sported. They now grow in rows, and when one falls out, another moves forward like a conveyor belt\u2014some species go through as many as 35,000 teeth over a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Fossilized shark teeth, abundant near river bed banks, sand pits and beaches, have provided scientists with crucial insights into their diets and behaviors. One of the most iconic examples of this involves a tooth that led to the discovery of the <em>Megalodon. <\/em>This massive shark lived approximately 23 million years ago and could reach lengths of up to 60 feet, making it one of the largest predators to exist.<\/p>\n<p>Another hallmark of sharks is their electrosensory system, which allows them to detect the faint electric fields produced by the movement of prey.
